Steam Play gets a small update with Proton 4.11-5 now available

By - | Views: 13,876

CodeWeavers and Valve have updated Steam Play once again, this time it's quite a small release to fix up some issues.

Released today was Proton 4.11-5 with these updates:

  • Fix a crash caused by certain input devices that was introduced in Proton 4.11-4.
  • Fix games running in virtual desktops and semi-transparent windows, both problems introduced in Proton 4.11-4.
  • Performance optimization when using a controller on amdgpu driver.
  • Improvement to fsync implementation when WINEFSYNC_SPINCOUNT is set.

Full changelog can be found here as always.

Are you interested in listening to podcasts? The latest episode of Linux For Everyone has an interview with CodeWeavers which is well worth a listen. While it doesn't have any new special details (keep expectations in check), it does have some nice background info. The team at CodeWeavers sound like a great bunch.

I continue to be impressed with the progress, can't believe the amount of games that have become playable over the last year thanks to this. No Man's Sky working well with the huge update has to be a personal highlight. What has been your highlight with it recently?

Blazblue Central Fiction, perfectly playable on 4.11 after installing Media foundations libraries. Only works on 4.11 so part of the work is being done by Proton while Media Foundations is only for making the game to not crash on video playback.

@orochi_kyo : how did you add media foundation libs? That's one of the things that prevents me from playing Darksiders.

Spotted the update waiting, downloaded it, and then come to GOL and spot this article. Hehe, pretty quick response time.

Does someone know why Japanese companies have fetish with using media foundation with their games? I imagine it's because xbox, but does ps4 uses it too?

I really can't imagine a good reason for not use free and multi platforms libraries for videos besides miss information (which I think it's improbable), even if its a directx game.

It feels like they're still using just to difficult the life of linux gamers.

PS4 does not use it, this is Microsoft Windows only. Actually I'm not even 100% sure that the shit works on Xbox, all the Microsoft pages only refer to it as Windows only, no mention of xbox at all (although info on xbox is probably locked behind some expensive sdk).

I tried running Borderlands TPS the other day to play with a Windows-using friend since the Linux update may never come, but the game doesn't locally save properly. I can see the last edit time changing on the save files, which seems to rule out location or permission issues, but no change is actually kept between sessions. Really odd.
