We have it confirmed that Crusader Kings III will be releasing for Linux

By - | Views: 20,670

Good news for grand strategy game fans! After announcing Crusader Kings III during PDXCON with it looking likely to be coming to Linux, we now have confirmation.

As soon as it was announced, we sent off our usual emails to their PR team at TriplePoint and today we got a reply direct from a Paradox developer:

Hey Liam
You asked Blane about the status of Crusader Kings 3 and Linux. I can confirm that we continue to support Linux.

Really fantastic news, especially since Crusader Kings III is going to have a focus on easing players into it with guided advice and a new tips system to keep you involved. It's such a massive game that it can be quite overwhelming, so this pleases me.

For a little more CKIII news, they just put up their first in a series of developer diaries. Interestingly, they've been working on it for quite a long time, even before Stellaris was born back in 2016.

While they're keeping the core gameplay from CKII, they said "CK3 is an evolution, not a revolution" and so they're not bringing over everything from the CKII expansions. Instead, they're trying to make the main features of it deeper and not expand so far outwards. Their main design goals are:

  • Character Focus: Crusader Kings is clearly and unequivocally about individual characters, unlike our other games. This makes CK most suited for memorable emergent stories, and we wanted to bring characters into all important gameplay mechanics (where possible.)
  • Player Freedom and Progression: We want to cater to all player fantasies we can reasonably accommodate, allowing players to shape their ruler, heirs, dynasty and even religion to their liking - though there should of course be appropriate challenges to overcome.
  • Player Stories: All events and scripted content should feel relevant, impactful and immersive in relation to the underlying simulation. That way, players will perceive and remember stories - their own stories, not the developers’ stories.
  • Approachability: Crusader Kings III should be user friendly without compromising its general level of complexity and historical flavor. It’s nice if it’s easier to get into, but more than that, it should be clear what everything in the game is, what you might want to be doing, and how to go about it.

Want to get yourself ready? Crusader Kings III has a Steam page to wishlist and follow and you can also now play Crusader Kings II free on Steam. Additionally, you can get The Old Gods expansion free by signing up to their newsletter.

I had expected this, as Paradox is by a wide margin the most Linux friendly studio out there, but glad to hear it's confirmed anyway! :)

Can't wait to play the more aproachable incest simulator. I hope that I can sacrafice my relatives to satan in third one too (after few DLC's) and baptize my kids in the name of the dark lord. And cut some penises off from the dirty heretic kings that dare to oppose me and feast on them.

I think Arcen games would give them a run for their money Linux-friendly wise. But Paradox is certainly one of the top.

I think the announcement was already quite enough confirmation - I can't imagine that in such an important announcement they would casually include a platform they aren't sure to support.

However, I'm a bit sad about the challenges to unlock cosmetics (by playing CK2) not being available for us. More for the fun of participating than for the cosmetics themselves, though it will be a bad precedent if we can't get those. Looks like the system they use for registering the challenges doesn't work on Linux, which is a reasonable excuse but still sucks that after all this time there is some content we won't get.

Apparently that might be possible in the base game, though maybe a bit difficult to pull off. Religions are now customizable and you can create your own heresies by changing doctrines, which will most likely result in a few very interesting faiths. It is mentioned at the end of this article. Of course, their example of ritual cannibalism isn't much of a change to Catholicism - Catholics already claim to eat the transubstatiated flesh of a half-god every time they hold mass. I hope I can finally turn cat-holicism into real cat worship.

Kudos to the people at Paradox! That's great news and they continue with a great Linux support. As a fan of grand strategy game, Crusade King III will be a buy I am looking forward to!

Linux was never mentioned in their announcements and their press/platform info only said "PC". They did have a blank system requirements for Linux on Steam and a Linux icon on their Paradox store but we know how all too often those things get quietly removed. This is the first solid confirmation on it.

Good news. Was worried a while ago when they said on their business podcast that linux demand was waning, and that when they got their next generation of engine we might be dropped. This bodes well for future games from their internal studio :)
