With EA continuing to dump their older games onto Steam, the popular MMO STAR WARS: The Old Republic is now available thanks to Steam Play Proton it's easier than ever to play it on Linux.

Confused? Don't know what Steam Play or Proton are? Check out our dedicated page first.

This free to play MMO originally released in 2011 and it's set thousands of years before the original Star Wars movies. A time when the Sith are very much around and something not explored in any of the movies. As a huge Star Wars fan, seeing this easy to access on Steam makes me happy. Not a fan of Origin? Good news for Linux users, as it's not here. The Old Republic is one EA title that does not come with the Origin client and so it should be less of a nuisance.

Like the fancy HUD in the corner? That's MangoHud.

With the latest stable version of Proton with 5.0-9, the game works and performs well. Tested across a character I had left on it from a great many years ago, to a brand new character pictured above. There is one issue though: with the typical Star Wars intro video giving you a blank white screen with audio. It's possible to just skip it but thanks to that one issue it's not perfect out of the box. Still, an overall minor point when the rest of the game works so well.

Looks like the Steam release is quite popular, unsurprisingly, with well over twenty-five thousand players online. Looks like another EA game to get a player boost thanks to Steam. You can find STAR WARS: The Old Republic on Steam.

oof. It's been 8 years since I cancelled my SWTOR subscription (after like 3 months of playing it, and having paid full-price for it to boot), and I'm still bitter about that game

I expected KotOR3, but I got a paint-by-numbers WoW clone. I hated it :(

I'd like to monitor my CPU/GPU heat in-game too. What is the tool providing the °C data?

Amen.

The "single player" campaign was pretty ace, but the multiplayer aspect was just nowhere near ready for release

I don't get why you didn't like it, care to expand? I've played a couple hours and found it pretty good.

No, not really. I don't want to turn yet another news story into a griping section and I've said said enough about this game to last me a lifetime already.

Might also be that part of it was just the whiplash of unmet expectations. I'm sure if you're into the whole MMORPG thing, it might even be a servicable game, but, well, it's not for me and it's not what I expected.

You did? Nice. Can you send me the URL to read? If you find it inconvenient to send it in public, I'd be glad if you send in a private message, my profile is open.

Unfortunately I'm not, I easily demotivate from playing MMOs, even recognizing their amazing playability and features. That's why I only played this very game we're talking about only a few hours (happened with all that I've tried, the one with most hours I have is Neverwinter with about 40h). On the other hand, I played KOTOR 1 and 2 to the end a couple times.

Tried to open an account, says that email is already in use. I most definitely didn't open an account for this game.

A bunch of fail. Looks like I'll skip this.

Edit: I probably opened that account to play some other EA/Bioware game that I no longer remember. I was able to reset password, but I don't have high hopes for the game. Likely a waste of bandwidth.
