Linux hardware vendor ZaReason has officially closed up shop

By - | Views: 20,492

Always sad when a Linux-focused business fails. ZaReason announced recently that they're no longer in business.

ZaReason aren't even a name that was heard all that often, which is part of the problem. You hear a lot about System76, TUXEDO, Slimbook, Star Labs and other Linux vendors but ZaReason gradually reduced their output and now we know why.

In the statement they sent out it mentioned how their product line was getting smaller and their tech support was "slowing down to a crawl". So what happened? Well, "the pandemic has been the final KO blow" they said with their "little town" being hit hard and they've been unable to recover from it. They officially shut on November 24, 2020. No other reasons were given but it's likely increased competition from the previously mentioned vendors plus the likes of Dell, Lenovo and others in the Linux space also not helping them.

Thankfully, we do have plenty of hardware support now in 2020 so it's not a big problem.

Their website is now just a blank page. You can see the full statement they sent out to people below:

I have heard of ZaReason, and rather liked them. I bought a ZaReason laptop once. It was good. Not good enough to stick in my mind and make me rave, but I haven't had any laptops like that. Good enough for me not to be able to remember anything being wrong with it. When I was looking online for Linux laptops and wanting something more on the light and portable than the power monster end, I tended to find the ZaReason offerings looked more workable than the System76 ones. They were also more flexible in terms of what distro they'd put on a computer than System76--where System76 was, until they started rolling their own, always Ubuntu or nothin', from ZaReason I could actually get a computer with Mint (among other possibilities) preinstalled if I wanted. Not that it's hard to install myself, but it was just a nice feeling, you know?

So I'm sad they're gone.

Quoting: EhvisThe problem with US stores is that when you've added tax, shipping and customs fees, it's not really worth it. So not that surprising that US stores remain fairly unknown in Europe.

This is why I won't buy System76 stuff - by the time you add on customs fees, GST, the so-called "Australia Tax" and everything else, even their cheapest computers compare to high-end computers here (in Australia), with regards to price... It's simply not worth it, when for the same price, I can get something much, much better locally and put a Linux-based operated system on it with similar compatibility.
