Work on Heroic Games Launcher, the open source Linux alternative to the Epic Games Store continues rapid improvements with a huge new release out now. Continuing to build upon the work started with another open source tool, Legendary, which hooks into the Epic Games Store but doesn't provide users with a proper GUI.
The recently released 1.0 version (and a few bug fixes after) revamps the entire flow and design of the application, with a much sleeker looking interface and it actually does look pretty good right now. Most of it works how you would expect too, quite useful for all those free games Epic keeps giving out…if you decide to play them on Linux.
Here's a couple quick shots:
It expanded elsewhere too with a new login screen, there's a new settings page where you can configure launch options and pick things like what version of the Wine compatibility layer you wish to use to launch games. There's also now a filter to see only installed games and lots of little improvements and fixes all throughout.
Still a shame such a community project is even needed, but another fine case of a few doing what a big company won't do, since Epic Games appear to have no plans at all to directly support Linux with the client and store. At least now, Linux has something with a fancy UI that can work with it quite easily.
The fun thing is that this is just the start. They plan to look into cloud syncing, claiming the free games that Epic regularly give away, adding games outside of Epic and to support other stores too. So eventually, the Heroic Games Launcher may be another all-in-one solution to launch your games on Linux with Epic Games as their jumping off point.

Its already in Heroic. Go to Settings, click on wine default and it is there.
Just choose a Prefix and test away.

just add the proton GE folder as default wineprefix and you can choose between all of your downloaded GE versions
i just tried 2 games and they work OOTB

I did not know this project existed until today and I am happy I know now.
Rather than mess with Lutris, heroic, and custom proton versions I'm likely to only install the game via Legendary but then run/launch it with Proton on steam, similar to how GamerOS does it.

Just one small note about Proton. Right now Heroic is calling the wine binary inside the Proton folder and this is not the right way to do it so it might have some issues.
I'm changing it to use the
--wrapper {proton} --no-wine legendary command to run the actual proton wrapper and get all its advantages. This should come on the next version.For now, I recommend using Lutris-wine instead.

It's cool that people are making it easier for themselves and others.
The lame part is Epic Games & their nasty attitudes these last (5?) few years.
I would encourage the creators to consider expanding the scope to included GOG, Itch and others in addition to Epic.
For someone like me I'd rather spend the extra 50 bucks to not have to register an Epic account and support Tencent/China -- destroyer of Riot Games / League of Legends and other things I used to like.
Tim Sweeny is a hot-head who got himself & Epic into a epic lawsuit with Apple over in-app transactions. Guess it doesn't always pay to be off your rocker.
