There's no stopping the Viking invasion as Valheim hits 3 million sales

By - | Views: 37,002

Valheim has truly become an absolute runaway hit. A survival game about Vikings running around in co-op chopping down trees and facing off against big bosses.

Less than three weeks since the Early Access release, Iron Gate announced today that it's now sold three million copies. This is just absurd but it's genuinely well deserved. This isn't some AAA or even AA team with a huge budget, Iron Gate is a tiny team backed up by Coffee Stain Publishing.

The team shared some other records they've managed to hit recently too including over 60,000 user reviews with an Overwhelmingly Positive rating, they're now doing so well they're rising up the Steam Top 250 and it has been one of the most popular games on Twitch lately too. There's just no stopping it.

A lot more content is planned for the game too, some of which PC Gamer managed to get from the developer after a recent interview. New content will include more objects to build homes with, new exploration encounters, ship customization and a more fleshed out ocean, new biomes and so on. Quite a bit to be excited about!

At this point, you don't really need me to recommend you go and buy it do you? Well, you should. It is a huge amount of fun and the majority of my time has been spent alone in solo because it's been fun to discover all the secrets of the world. Being able to take your character online to whatever server you want is a big bonus too, just try not to die.

Seems to have caused a surge for LinuxGSM too, the really great tool for managing game servers. Going by their stats we can see Valheim is now the most popular game being hosted with their kit with over 750 servers live.

Have you been enjoying Valheim? Be sure to show us your great constructions in the comments, we would love to see what you've been building.

With full Linux support you can buy Valheim on Steam.

Well, at least funding the rest of the game should not be an issue by now.

They still have a lot of plans, I managed to play it a bit by now, but I'll probably wait for the finished product for a play through.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyThey may not have had a huge budget before, but they've sure as hell got one now.

Yeah, sounds a bit like the next Mojang in the making. However we all know how that ended :-/

This is the main reason I haven't really tried harder to start playing it. Like I really wanted to get into 7 days to Die, and played it quite a bit, but it always felt just on the cusp of being great, and didn't want to keep playing it until it was really finished.

Some games stay in Early Access for far too long...

Thinking exact the same, but its so hard to stop playing :D But i guess ig would be good to wait until tge second update, when more interest places will come. Hm

I've played for ~40 hours so far, and I haven't even defeated the second boss yet. Hell, I only just made a boat and discovered my fourth biome (swamp). I'm not worried about running out of content before the next update.

Since Liam asked for screenshots, here's a couple of my main base:

It takes around 8 hours to get to/kill the first boss. I played another couple of hours after that, exploring into the Black Forest, but I've stopped for the moment in the hopes that we might consider streaming it multiplayer throughout March and beyond. It's well worth the purchase already, imo, and I'm reasonably anti-EA generally.

LinuxGSM is an awesome tool and I’m glad it’s getting the popularity it deserves. +100% servers in the last 30 days!

What a great story of success! This seems to be a kind of huge win for Linux if this game's developers moved away from windows as developing environment. I'm now almost tempted to buy and try this game! That would be also the best way to support the company behind it ofc.Still the game isn't ready yet but pictures and reviews from it are very promising. But one must have a little patience now till it's ready.Maybe then I'll give it a chance!

Probably need to buy this at some stage to support a Linux developer. But its not really my type of game, but might be interesting if modding comes into the picture. Does anyone know if modding sdk will be a thing?

Yes it be nice if more developers just made their games on Linux because getting them running under windows is far less of a issue vs the other way around (OpenGL performance can be a concern for some games if they decide to go that route).

Modding is not supported, though unsure if that is an EA thing and will come later. However seems people already working on it.

Valheim Plus

I assume it runs under Vulkan as when starting you get a menu choice to start the game or start under OpenGL.
