More quick fixes coming in recently for Proton Experimental to get even more Windows games to play nicely on Linux with this compatibility layer. Note: to play games using CEG DRM, you should opt into the Steam Client Beta.

Released November 4, the latest update to Proton Experimental added in improved support for Mafia II (Classic), Disgaea 4 Complete+ and Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered. On top of that, more work went into improving the new support for CEG DRM on Linux with Proton. Now you should see an improvement to the startup time of games using it, pushing it another step forwards towards being ready to roll out in a stable version of Proton.

You can continue to report on CEG DRM games on the Valve GitHub Ticket. See the Proton Experimental changelog to see all the current differences.

Need to know how to actually use Proton Experimental? Here's a simple HOWTO (as it's not complicated!). Make sure it's installed by searching for it in your Steam Library, then select it from the Compatibility menu in the Properties section of a game. See our quick video below:

For an explainer in text form:

  1. Search for Proton Experimental and install if not already.
  2. Right click any game on Steam and go to Properties.
  3. Select the Compatibility menu on the right side.
  4. Ensure the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" is ticked.
  5. From the dropdown box that appears select Proton Experimental.

Age of Empires IV should also work with this version given the updates to vkd3d-proton (at least on AMD/Nvidia).

Is official proton ever likely to get FSR fullscreen support? Right now it's consider a Proton-GE "hack". But it's so vital for 4K gaming on modern AAA games that it means that I pretty much use Proton-GE for absolutely every title these days.

I've always thought there should be a baseball game, Age of Umpires.

I am not sure if Valve wants to put it into Proton or whether it will land into gamescope. But either way it will probably happen.

I'm happy to report the Star Trek game (delisted, but it's a third person shooter from the PS3/360 generation) now works correctly. Before it would only work through Winesteam to get around CEG. The first experimental release with CEG support didn't work, but it looks like the most recent update fixed it.

I should probably try a few more CEG games I have in the library, but Star Trek was the one I really wanted working. It's not great, but it is more Star Trek.

Wolfenstein (2009) and Duke Nukem Forever now seem to work again with the CEG support. Billions cheer.
