Crown of Pain could turn into the next great match-3 RPG

By - | Views: 11,000

Do you like Match 3 games? Well, I do! Crown of Pain mixes together the idea of matching tiles but blends in turn-based RPG battles too.

Now in Early Access from Jagit Games, Coldwild Games it might be a little rough going in with not enough of an explanation for now but you can quickly piece together what tiles will help. Visually quite simple with the pixel art, but the atmosphere is good enough to pull you in for that "just one more run" feeling that I got from a great many other games.

The main gameplay consists of building up a team of heroes, then battling through the tile-matching section where matching the right tiles together will launch attacks, or managing to get combinations together for special abilities. As you progress, you also get to upgrade each individual hero too.

It's simple and effective, exactly what you want in a blending of these two genres together. Can't wait to see how it evolves during Early Access which the developer said could continue up to a year for the full release. As a debut game from Latvia-based solo dev Jagit Games it's good.

I must be out of the loop. I'd no idea what a Match-3 game was until this article :-)

Usually I don't like pixel art, but just like Loop Hero, this game's visuals manage to catch my eye.

it's probably the tightest name-to-gamplay match of any genre in gamingdom.

I did get sucked into Tomb of Tyrants that had a great art style and some light RTS(?) mechanics where you match to get currency which buys rooms to slow down invading heroes. Do recommend it.
