Indie classic Super Hexagon gets a big free Neo update out now

By - | Views: 18,484

Super Hexagon, a true indie gem classic from Terry Cavanagh has a big update out now and it has also become Steam Deck Verified with it. Previously available in Beta, it's now in the Stable branch for all players.

While the gameplay is the same, a lot of the tech behind the game was rewritten to perform better, along with much improved gamepad / controller support. This is only the start too, with a Part 2 coming at some point that has also been teased. Developer Ethan Lee wrote some comments about the work involved on Twitter, and you can see the Neo update page for the full details.

This should keep the game running smoothly on all platforms for a long time to come.

You can buy it in many places like Humble Store, Steam, itch.io and GOG.

If you want to see how it runs on a Steam Deck, check it out below:

I reinstalled it -- to find that I'm horribly rusty, as I can't survive beyond 12 seconds on Hard (the easiest difficulty is called 'Hard', btw). My record is 87 seconds on Hard, & 20-something on Harder.

I imagine this would be really fun to play on Steam Deck.

I've had some fun with this game, I used it as meditation practice lol. My scores are similar,

Hard: 90:23
Harder: 47:41
Hardest: 13:50

I haven't played in awhile either. 26:58 on Hard, not too bad for a first go haha, I remember some of the patterns. This game is ridiculous and I recommend everyone play it. I can never get any of my friends to play lol

Will the drm-free versions over at humble, gog, and itch also be updated and, if so, when?

At the moment, the non-steam shops offer only older versions for download.

This game haunts my dreams, I've been 5 seconds away from unlocking the final difficulty mode for years now, and every time I revisit it I can get just as tantalizingly close to success with just a bit of warmup, yet it just never happens. I've tried caffeine, a good night's rest, hard alcohol, meditation, even adderall one time, and nothing gets me any closer, it feels like a curse. I feel as if this game has shattered my idealism, like it's the distilled evidence that no matter how much effort I put forth some things will forever be out of my reach. I can't become an astronaut, I can't become a world renowned ferret legging player, and I can't effing beat Super Hexagon

Added a Steam Deck video to the article.
Tried again today and got:
Hexagon: 53:00
57:09
Hexagoner: 19:57
Hexagonest: 6:51 9:47

Y'all are better than me. My hand gets tired pretty quickly.

EDIT: I just set a personal best of 67:00 in Hexagon, and a pathetic 5:42 in Hardester.
