A game I really haven't spent enough time with because it's great, Vintage Story is a blocky survival game that's thoroughly challenging and a huge upgrade is out now. Inspired by lovecraftian horror themes, it's definitely one of the more unique open-world survival games around.

Version 1.17.0 is now in testing, so it's not fully released, and comes with absolutely tons that's new. A big tech overhaul too that should improve RAM use, starting a world should be twice as fast, multiple improvements to overall performance and improvements to creature AI too. Heck, there's even a fancy new water system that allows water to flow through most blocks that aren't solid.

New trailer is below and it's seriously impressive:

Other new additions include lightning strikes, 200+ new blocks, big visual upgrades to the temporal storms that happen, armour can now be repaired, 300 types of shield (a 30-fold increase), more and prettier flora, new and improved fauna like the addition of brown bears, black bears, sun bears, pandas and a gazelle, deserts storms are in, bamboo and straw hats and the list goes on.

Vintage Story doesn't get enough credit for being such a thoroughly interesting and massive game.

You can buy it from Humble Store, itch.io and the official site.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyAt this point I'm not sure what you're complaining about--are you saying that it's DRM if you can't download the game again from a company that's gone under?

The problem is that you might have a downloaded copy saved, but it might not be installable after the company goes under. It's not like a GoG situation where even if GoG goes under, the installers still work and the game is still playable.

Ah, that's an interesting point.

You must realize the game is a husband and wife team and its their lives' work. They have some outside contributors too, but they are the owner of the game. They can hardly "go under". Most of the game logic is already open source, I'm sure that if for some reason they can't develop the game any more, they will either find a new developer, or open source the whole game. This game is a labor of love, they would not throw away all this work and passion, they will make sure it stays available.

Quoting: wytrabbitAny great servers to recommend for beginners?

There are any great servers, my personal favorite is Aura Fury (this server is whitelisted, you must join through https://aurafurygaming.com/vintagestory), and a lot of players play on the Official Public Test Server, even though it says "test server" its a stable reliable server that has been around for years (operated by the dev teams themselves) but its open to anyone, so make sure to claim your base to avoid the occasional griefers.

There's some servers that are language specific (german, russian, french, etc.) and there's some long running servers like Mudwall, Conquest of Blocks and Vintage Civ. You can come discuss with players on the official discord (https://discord.gg/rXRVtZAz) #multiplayer channel and get more information than what I alone can provide and find the server that the best for your play style/tastes.

I am on Mudwall server for some time. Active community, strict rules, great admin team.

The best way, how to find a server fit for you is to visit official VS discord. There is thread dedicated to the server announcing.

Honestly, for this game, this fear is highly exaggerated, in my opinion. The games DRM is ridiculously minimal as DRM goes and would more than likely hinder your game play experience in none but the most nominal way. As far as the fear of the company going under... while I can't speak to what the developers may actually do, but I get the feeling that if such a case were to occur, their last update would most likely remove the DRM that's there. Even if that doesn't happen, the game fans would have the DRM cracked within a couple weeks if not a couple days and the game will live on until the last fan forgets about the game.

As far as whether the game will be installable... I bought the game directly through the game's website. From there, it's distributed as a .zip file. For me, "installable" is a matter of unzipping a file. Pound for pound, this is even simpler an install process than a DRM free GOG installable game (is the game available on Steam? If so, I'll have to nab it there to and see how it plays on my Steam Deck)

Quoting: KROMAny experiences playing it on the Deck? Sounds great for couch sessions, but not sure if it is playable on the Deck.

To quote and answer myself:
Yes it does work on the Deck. There's a flatpack for the game in Dolphin, which makes things easy. I was not successful installing the game manually (downloading game, adding it to the Deck and to Steam library), but the flatpack version runs fine.

Here's a quick guide how to install it: Install guide Steam Deck

Quoting: DrakkerThis game is very realistic and a lot more challenging. Each update brings *consistent* improvements, not random unrelated things like Minecraft.

Would still be more realistic and a lot better without this "temporal storms"! Still don't get it why the game needs this.

You can turn them off when creating new world! Both temporal storms and temporal stablity This game is one of the most customizable games ever.

OK, if you can do that meanwhile then I might give it another try. Last time I played it there was no option to turn it off and the storm was raging for hours! Which made the game unplayable. Thx.
