I have to admit I am a little bit excited by this. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 is now confirmed to be coming to Steam. So we could be playing classic Metal Gear on Linux desktop and Steam Deck with Proton very soon.

The collection will release on October 24th and include Metal Gear Solid (including VR / Special Missions), MGS 2: Sons of Liberty (HD Collection version) and MGS 3: Snake Eater (HD Collection version)) as the main games. Plus extras of Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear (NES/FC version) and Snake's Revenge.

This was confirmed in an official video:

I have such fond memories of playing Metal Gear Solid on the original PlayStation. Being able to play them easily (hopefully) thanks to Proton on my desktop or on the go with my Steam Deck is going to be pretty great.

Will you be picking it up?

The MGS1 and 2 PC ports back in the day were a mess - especially MGS2 - it would refuse to run on AMD cards properly without a bugfix. I look forward to these being rectified. I hope we get a choice of the MGS1 original and remake - the GC version port would be nice considering it is stuck on that platform.

MGS3 will be nice to play on PC. I've even played the port to the NVIDIA shield - unfortunately though the DRM on that one requires a constant connection which is infuriating.

Now what about MGS4 - that terribly needs a re-release/remaster.

As far as I know, even if the Nintendo content in it was removed, Konami may not fully own the rights to that remake (it seems to be up in the air whether or not the developer, Silicon Knights, holds any ownership of that version of the game), so I get the feeling that it might stay stuck there, unfortunately.

There might be some hope for that! It would appear that a second Master Collection volume may already be in the works.

Yeah since Silicon Knight's dissolution who knows hey. As in regards to MGS4, I really hope so - I didn't recently play through it again through the ps3 emulator at 60fps (not consistant - but mostly) but it did crash every hour or so. So I would really love that even if they don't do any texture or asset updates.

That's not that much fun, but still manageable. Did the game or the emulator crash?

I used a custom build of rpcs3 at the time, occasionally the emulator would hardlock occasionally - it was due to a sound bug in the emulator in regards to specifically MGS4. On saying that I did complete it fully and there were no visual glitches at all.
