Steam Deck now the global #1 top seller on Steam

By - | Views: 45,037

With the Steam Summer Sale 2023 now in full swing, and with a big discount on the Steam Deck, it has risen back up the Steam charts. It's not a big surprise really, especially the top end model at a 20% discount marking the price down from £569 to £455.20. That's a pretty huge saving on one of the best PC handhelds around.

Looking over the stats today that Valve publishes, globally the Steam Deck has moved from fifth to first place. In the UK all models are currently listed as out of stock too, although they were all in stock yesterday when the sale went live.

Check stock in your own country here, or on Komodo for certain regions in Asia.

For the UK, this likely stings a little for people who were about to purchase, as the 64GB and 256GB model have been constantly out of stock for some time now. Valve did not reply to my previous email asking about plans for increasing stock on those models in the UK.

Good news for Valve though as it shows how ridiculously popular the Steam Deck remains. Even before the sale, it has been consistently in the Top 5 on the global sales list. The list is by revenue though, not units sold, but when you note that it's up against games that sell multiple hundreds of thousands (and millions at times) — they're shifting a lot for what is still quite a niche device overall.

Did you pick one up?

I am also in the same boat. But if Deck had VoLTE, things would be very different for me.

Steam Deck 64 + NVME is the way to go imo.

Me neither. How has that thing been doing, anyway? We had a big stir about it but since then things have been quiet--are they selling?

Well, they are burning micro SD cards, and enjoying windows 11 + armoury crate combo so much in the meanwhile so... I guess it's doing.... well?

Also, in Europe the thing costs 800€ (base model) which is almost double the price of the 64gb model. They are not even in the same market. 400€ more (almost) for a console that's "slightly" more powerful and allows you to play multiplayer games that can't run in steam deck is a hard one to swallow for many people.

This is personal experience so take it with a pinch of salt, but among my group of around 30 friends, people regularly talk about steam deck (and they are not linux users) while they barely remember the ally at all.

Come to think of it, how's the dock? Or is it better to still get a 3rd party one?

Yep, can relate. It isn't like I ever go outside, but it'd be fun to tinker with and waste time for that one occasion when going outside is mandatory. Wouldn't regret a free one

It's also nice in bed!
You do go to bed, don't you? ;)

Steam Deck is such a comfortable device and the screen is big enough for a real pleasant gaming experience in bed and corner of a sofa "Steam Deck is good in bed"

I use the steam deck 100% for work, as a replacement for my laptop.
It crashes less. Most of the things just work.
So if you need something to work on... It's nice.

I've no experience with 3rd party alternative, but I don't regret buying the official dock. Note that I did not have a compatible second charger which definitely factors into the price considerations – I mainly keep one on my desk (also used in bed) and one in the living room (and outside of the house).

Dunno. It's been very quiet which is surprising after the big announcement of the Rog Ally back then. It's been a while on sale. I've also heard that they sell it in Australia ( where Valve haven't expanded their delivery of SD). And for me, the ad of Rog ally(e-mail) came from my telephone company which I discarded immmediately. So maybe Asus have a better distribution network but I find their choice of OS conservative. Windows 11, from What I've heard doesn't fit well on ally. So even if Rog ally is better in some ways than Steam Deck, I think that in the long run Steam Deck will win. The proof is the number one spot in Steam selling statistics which surprised me. Obviously people want to get rid of windows as choice of game OS. Also maybe it's a magic of Linux that attracts people. One can only guess what the reasons are. But let us see what tomorrow brings!

the list is by revenue so if they are number 1 despite the discount that still make they the number 1 by revenue.

anyway i cant wait for then to sell on Brasil or for importers to pick this price and resell here for an competitive price... er this last one isnt happening i know my country enough to know that.
