Interior Worlds is a strange and unsettling liminal spaces game that arms you with a mysterious camera. It's quite atmospheric and full of secrets to discover. They recently put up a Native Linux build which didn't initially work due to some missing bits (Unity being odd) but they've now managed to solve the issues and so it works out of the box.

"Welcome to Interior Worlds; an ambient and unsettling first-person exploration game where you'll dive into strange, yet familiar spaces. Temporary gaps and portals we cross at some point or another - now yearning for a closer look. A look that can only be seen properly through the lens of an SLR camera."

Game Features:

  • Use your vintage and mysterious analog camera to capture stunning photographs of environmental anomalies throughout each space. Keep a sharp eye out while traversing the more... ominous locations.
  • Track and share your own in-game catalog of photos, timestamped and pre-filtered with subtle layers of maximum liminal crust.
  • Ten unique thresholds to traverse. A roadside hotel, empty movie theater, dying mall, and many more. Every environment is hand-crafted in a loving throwback to late 90's and early 00's graphics.
  • A multitude of ways to capture photos. Adjust zoom levels, increase/decrease lens focus, tilt left/right for a dutch angle, and more. Create perturbing compositions in hundreds of ways.
  • Unparalleled interactivity. Activate vending machines, phones, sinks, televisions, or simply turn the lights on or off for a different photo-moment vibe.
  • Immersive and unsettling soundscape. Melt into an eerie mix of low, rumbling drones and soft, stretched pads during the journey.

Available to buy on Steam. Also itch.io but I don't think that version is up to date.

Looks like a walking simulator version of Fatal Frame......

A game about taking photos with a camera?

Better take your camera and go outside to take some fancy real life photos.

Well, the thing about this argument is that I do (may) like walking through abandoned mental hospitals at night (taking photos), fighting dragons or exploring mars in a computer game - but I don't want to do that in real life.

I'm going to grab that tonight for 12 bucks. I'm not really interested in photography (I don't even take good pictures of my thumb) but it sounds like something I'll enjoy. Exploration is one of the drivers for me in a game.

Damn you Liam. I mean I like the look of this game but I just decided that I'm not going to upgrade my camera this summer after all.

Guess who just spent two hours looking at DSLR body prices and reviews...

Linux version needs some work.

Black screen for intro video. I didn't even know that was wrong at first, there was the text at the bottom and I had to press E to advance it.

In game, the menu was non functional. I'm pretty sure it was working in the Prologue, because I did exit. But in the Garage... No text, and the mouse and keyboard were defunct (except ESC which brought me back in game). I could only quit the game by killing the process.

I switched it to my Proton and lo and behold, there was actually a driving cut scene in the intro. I played through to the Garage part and the menu displays and works correctly.

Now I just have to figure out what I'm supposed to be taking pictures of, while wandering around with a burlap sack over my head (that's what the "grain" effect looks like in this game. It's not helping it... the artwork is NOT that ugly that it has to be covered up by that)

Looks better if played in a small window (like the screenshots and video on Steam, downsampled where it's not as noticeable)

I get a kick out of stuff like this though. Mock brands make me laugh :-)

This was just an excuse to post your expensive camera, wasn't it?

Frankly, I didn’t intend to provoke such a reaction when I posted it.
I’m an enthusiast photographer who likes all about the topic.
This thread is about a game with mechanics based on photography.

I let myself gone. That’s it.

Expensive camera?
Sure. But none of the most.
I’m not rich, and had to save many months until I could purchase it second hand.
When you have a hobby or a passion is usual you invest more money than you should.

In many gaming sites one could see in the user profiles descriptions of gaming rigs worth various thousand of euros.

Sorry if I don’t feel guilty for sharing a pic of my camera.

What’s your actual gear?

Just an old Canon EOS 600D with old-camera problems like crappy high-ISO performance, mediocre autofocus, awkward connectivity etc. Now I'm dreaming of a big-boy 90D. But I'm going to be sensible and wait for Black Friday or something to save a hundred euros or so.

In the end, I don't really think the hardware matters that much. What matters is getting my ass in gear and taking more photos again, and hopefully the new DSLR body removes a couple of pain points and gives me a bit of additional motivation. Helps that this is a shared hobby with the wife.
