Valve released a fresh mid-week update to Proton Experimental to fix up issues across multiple games, and once again the dreaded EA App behaving badly once again.

Here's all that's changed for the August 23rd update:

  • Fixed Rainbow Six Extraction not working on the Steam Deck.
  • Fixed EA Desktop having a blank log-in window after its recent update.
  • Improved cutscene FPS in Immortals of Aveum.
  • Fixed Judgement causing GPU driver crashes at certain locations.
  • Fixed Meet Your Maker and possibly other Unreal Engine 5.1 games crashing displaying a winevulkan assertion.
  • Fixed Remnant 2 causing random GPU hangs.

Changelog here.

In case you missed it, we've also had Proton out for 5 years now! How time flies huh?

How to change your Proton version:

Steam Deck:

  • Pick a game in your Library and head to the little cog icon on the right.
  • Click Properties, then Compatibility on the left.
  • Make sure the tickbox is done, then select Proton Experimental from the dropdown.

On a Linux desktop:

  • Right click a game, go to Properties.
  • Compatibility on the left.
  • Make sure the tickbox is done, then select Proton Experimental from the dropdown.

I can't confirm yet, but supposedly this will also fix random hangs in Remnant 2 on nvidia, which I'm looking forward to, more because it's been one of the most weird, frustrating issues I've encountered in wine than because I'm all that excited about continuing to play the game. (With the exception of lots of crashes in the early days of dx12 support, almost 100% of the hundreds of games I've tested either "just work", "just don't work" [usually because a dependency is missing from the prefix] or suffer some weird graphical glitches that don't break the game, remnant 2 is the only game I can think of off the top of my head which was mostly working but suffering inscrutable stochastic failures with no real prospect of fixing beyond dxvk voodoo only properly understood by a few hundred people in the whole world.)

Tried re-installing Mass Effect LE and using the latest Proton Experiment. Game wouldn't launch; EA App is still a piece of garbage.

Finally! Rainbow Six Extraction 💪😎
I don't know how Valve effectively pays for all this engineering effort, but it's worth every penny I spend on it.
