Valve did a bit of a woops here, as they recently accidentally leaked the designs for what looks like their upcoming Steam Controller 2 and a new VR controller that is likely to come with the long leaked Deckard VR headset.

This is all speculation as always from leaks, as what we've seen might not even get released. As we saw from the Steam Deck, Valve go through a lot of iterations on their hardware before release.

Spotted by SteamDB developer Pavel Djundik on Bluesky, the newer Steam Controller 2 looks like everything I wanted. Here's a slightly upscaled version of what they found for what's code-named Ibex.

Looks rather nice, and I'm really happy to see dual thumbsticks and thumbpads, much more like the Steam Deck. Clearly Valve have taken notes about how much people love the inputs on the Steam Deck. My only concern there is how thick it looks, so it will be very interesting to eventually get my hands on it to see how it feels.

According to Djundik on Bluesky, here's how the leak happened:

The way it leaked is funny, [they] put "freetodownload" on the SteamVR app for anonymous accounts to access, which made all the depots accessible, and one of the depots was the contents for deckard/roy.

What do you think? Will you buy one?

So, I'm imagining Steam Deck, dock, TV, and Steam Controller 2 working together very smoothly to give you a kind of Steam Machine without a Steam Machine.

Definitely a day 1 buy if the controller has 2.54 ghz wireless with mic built into the controller for voice chat.

I am definitely buying it! I hope it is as comfortable and good as Steam Deck itself!

Quoting: _MarsThere has no doubt been a compromise to get all the inputs on the controller but I trust that they did enough testing on it.
I doubt they would release something like that if it weren't comfortable for at least 95% of testers. So even if the sticks look quite far away, it's probably going to be fine.

So excited for this. I might've considered the Hori controller when they sell them in Europe (assuming) but now I will wait for whenever this comes out. This has been enough confirmation of its existence for me.

I assure you that this hasn't been tested statisfactory yet.
Had it been we would've seen a release statement instead of a leak.

If this has back buttons like the Steam Deck, I'll buy two of them. I was hoping that a new Steam controller would basically copy the Deck's layout, and that's what this looks to be doing.

Quoting: denyasisI do think the Deck Controls are better than the Controller. If only there was a way to disable the touch pad while using the sticks, kinda like the way laptops could disable the touchpad while typing to prevent accidental touches. That would be really cool.
You can do this in software now:
-Create a new action later and set the trackpads to empty bindings
-Add a command to Joystick Touch which holds your action layer
Now when you are using the sticks, the trackpads will do nothing.

All honesty, this is EXACTLY what I was hoping for-- A Steam Deck minus CPU, storage, video-- as long as it has the back paddles (and it most certainly will) it'll be replacing my DualSense for anything that doesn't need the Adaptive Triggers.

If it supported that feature, I'd practically never need another controller type again.
That looks exactly like what I want from a Steam Controller 2. It's essentially the Steam Deck with the screen removed and the remaining halves fused together. That will be an instant buy when they release it.

It may be the best thing ever, but for now it's also the ugliest thing ever.
