Dune: Awakening will have BattlEye enabled for Linux, SteamOS / Steam Deck

Ahead of the release of Dune: Awakening, my one major concern with it has been swept away by the sands. Thankfully, the BattlEye anti-cheat will be enabled for players on Linux, SteamOS / Steam Deck to play it.

I've been trying to get a clear response on this for a while, even before we knew what anti-cheat system it would use. Thankfully, one of my press contacts today was able to speak to the developer directly to confirm "I'm pleased to say that that is indeed the plan" and that "Funcom are working with Steam to make this happen so rest assured".

Check out more anti-cheat compatibility on our dedicated page.

Excellent news. Would be a shame for players on Linux systems to miss out on what could end up being the biggest MMO for some time.

In other news, Funcom will be showing off the mid-to-end game in a livestream on May 28th across Twitch and YouTube, starting around 4PM UTC.

The most recent video, Dune: Awakening — Schools of the Imperium | The Mentat, shows off "A secretive and insular organization, the Order of Mentats conditions their adherents to store and analyze vast amounts of data at superhuman speeds. In Dune: Awakening, you can learn to condition your mind in this fashion to analyze the battlefield and become a master tactician and assassin"

More info:

Here are some of the Mentat’s early skills:

  • The Sentinel: Deploy a suspensor buoyed dart projector that uses motion detection to cover a field of fire. Trigger a second time to activate.
  • Poison Capsule: You have a hidden dart dispenser that fires off a specially prepared capsule filled with poisonous spores. On impact, a cloud of poison appears, building poison on all who remain within.
  • Shield Wall: You deploy a half-height Holtzman shield that provides cover during combat for you and your allies. It will also slow enemies who attempt to pass through it – giving you time to take them down.

The first Mentat trainer is Samin Moro, who you will find at Riftwatch, a Harkonnen base. Show her you have what it takes to create and administer poisons and she may teach you the ways of the Mentat.

I do have a key request in, so hopefully I'll be able to take a look close to or after the release to see how it runs in the full game to give you a clear report.

Happy to see a developer not following this nasty trend of only supporting Linux when it runs on a Steam Deck.

This just became instantly more interesting. Hopefully you'll be able to host your own servers

It's still a 50 euro game for which support can be revoked at any time. And since it doesn't actually "support" Linux, they don't even owe you an explanation. So I'm out.

Didn't realise this was Funcom, one of the more controversial publisher's out there. Their moderators are... concerning. Some of the Conan stories I've heard are really worrying.

I mean, it's Dune, so I might take a chance on this? But not until a few months in and reviews are settled, I think.

While playing the closed Beta, after the intro and before really going into the wild, it closed with an error about Anticheat. I then installed the Proton BattlEye Runtime and afterwards the Closed Beta run more or less flawlessly. Speed was absolutely fine on highest settings (mostly around or above 100 fps) (AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Radeon RX 7900 XT). More or less flawlessly because only now and then the image suddenly went a bit blurry and the game felt laggy during few seconds. Had no other Problems.

What do you mean? Their forum mods? I just ask because I was one a long time ago for The Secret World.

I played Secret World and Age of Conan back in the days and I cannot recall this being a problem? Do they have a different team now?
