Developer tobyfox has released DELTARUNE on Steam, their follow-up to the smash-hit UNDERTALE and it's a game that's just insanely hard to describe.

Even the creator has a hard time talking about what exactly it is noting "I don't know what you call this kind of game. It's just a game you can play after you complete UNDERTALE, if you want to". Is it actually connected to UNDERTALE? Well, that's not entirely clear either. The developer said "It's a different world that might even have different rules. That doesn't mean there will be no connections at all though". Okay then. It's one of those you just have to play it to get it situations.

It's been such a long time coming and such a big event for fans, the developer in the latest newsletter basically told you to stay off social media if you don't want to see spoilers.

You won't get any from me though, I haven't even played Chapter 1. Both this and UNDERTALE just fly a bit over my head. Yeah, yeah — I know, I'm missing out. I'll get around to them one day. Our resident contributor Samsai is the UNDERTALE / DELTARUNE nut who said to me "I have awaited for this day for aeons". Perhaps now there's more of it, I might blast through it in one go, being patient (just kidding, it's a long backlog) sure does pay off.

So what the heck is it? A retro-styled episodic RPG, with battles that you can resolve peacefully or through violence.

It's playable with the latest Proton 9.0-4 on Linux systems and Valve just today rated it Steam Deck Verified! As i was writing this the game hit 113,894 concurrent players on Steam — wow, that was fast.

DELTARUNE | Release Date: 4th June 2025

No Anti-Cheat. No malware. No unhinged DRM. No multiplayer. Just a game the way they're supposed to be: Singleplayer, offline.

I'll check it out after a replay of Undertale, but games like this existing restore my faith in gaming... Until another game with a multiplayer component gets popular again and ruins everything. emoji

Huge props to Toby Fox and I wish this game every success.

What a bizarrely elitist thing to bash on unprompted. There's nothing wrong with multiplayer. It's good for the medium to have a wide variety of different kinds of games.

It's good for the medium to have a wide variety of different kinds of games.
It's never good for single player games when their devs start focusing on MP shenanigans, usually failing and burning in the process.
Make single player games.
Make multiplayer games.
Make either with the possibility of being played like the other.
But don't add weird components of one into the other, know your game's identity and stick to it.

Gaming has been severely hurt by multiplayer trend-chasing devs and publishers, and Mr. sonic here is completely correct about that.

Just a heads up to everyone here, there is apparently a cutscene in Chapter 3 that is broken unless you use GE-Proton to play this game. The rest of the game will work fine except for this, so it'll catch you by surprise.

Yeah lol and multiplayer games exist outside of DRM and anti-cheat space.
