Cast n Chill is a relaxing fishing sim with some absolutely gorgeous pixel artwork, and you're going to need to take it away from me. Disclosure: key provided by the developer.

Another absolutely wonderful bit of casual gaming here, with no timers. Just you, your trusty pup, your boat and a fishing rod. There's around 50 different species to catch with an upgrade system that results in a satisfying little loop of catching, selling and upgrading. You can do everything yourself but there's also an idle mode where you can leave it for a while and see what happens.

It's the upgrade loop that really reeled me into this one. I wanted a better rod, a better lure, then a better boat and so on. And then add to that the individual upgrades for each, there's plenty to keep you fishing. The actual fishing is a minor challenge too, some of them really don't want to be caught. Getting bigger and bigger catches is satisfying though, every time it flashes up to note you beat your previous best - love it.

As relaxing as it is, naturally a game of this sort also comes with some frustration. When you're just not catching what you want, or anything for a while because they really are fighting. But it keeps you going, it makes you want to throw just one more line out to see if you can grab a legendary variety.

The environments in it really are quite stunning. Wombat Brawler are certainly talented at pixel art. I can't wait to see more, and more is on the way as a few more locations are coming to the game sometime in September. The developer has said they're also looking into co-op, weather and more. But right now without all the extras, it's still sweet.

You even get to pick what pup you want at the start.

Works perfectly on Linux with Proton 9.0-4. Thoroughly charming. If you love laid-back casual games it's good.

I wonder if the "Gone Fishing" sign on the wall is a reference to the classic Amiga / Atari ST game "Gone Fish'n" with pretty much the same basic template. Probably not, but I kinda hope it is.

I love the look of this game! Good pixel artists never fail to impress me! If you’re a fan of this art style, do check out Loco Motive too. I've started playing it recently and the animations are mighty fine!

Been playing this on the Deck in bed, while my wife watches her murders (her fav show of all time law n order and she watches all the variants on a loop omgoodness) and I've been LOVING it~!!!! It's got that perfect amount of relaxation as you mentioned. The environments are truly amazing, and I love how different each location is. I'm only on the second location, but yeah, the upgrade loop keeps me going.

Highly recommended!

It's so crazy, because even though I don't really like boaty things in real life (fishing, houseboats, rafting, kayaking, etc etc etc) some of my favorite and most played games on the Deck have been boaty. Dredge, Sail Forth, Dave the Diver, this game .... So strange. Maybe the portable format just leads more to that type of game I guess.
