The Drifter from Powerhoof is an awesome looking adventure thriller and it just got a new trailer, along with a release date reveal of July 17. Native Linux support is confirmed for the release too.
Inspired by the works of Stephen King, John Carpenter and Michael Crichton — it features some fantastic pixel-art and fast-paced gameplay that will work just as well with a mouse and keyboard, as it will with a gamepad. They've even put a demo up for Steam Next Fest so you can check it out right now.
Before you do though, have a look at the trailer below:

More about it:
A classic 2D point and click adventure with the brake-lines cut - The Drifter plunges players headfirst into a web of shadowy corporations, conspiracy, murder, and the thousand year obsession of a madman.
Mick Carter's been drifting a while now - moving from job to job, never staying one place long. Jumping a box-car to his old home town, he witnesses a violent murder, is pursued by hi-tech soldiers, thrown in a reservoir and drowned.
Just before his consciousness is ripped away, it is thrust back into his body. Alive again, seconds before his death. Mick is framed for the killing he witnessed, tormented by his own past, and haunted by the feeling that something followed him back from the other side…
The Drifter takes its cues from modern revival of the adventure genre and focuses on serving up a tight, razor-sharp narrative - propelling the player through the story - while grounded, unobtrusive and satisfying investigative puzzles act as the sinew between punchy narrative beats.
I can finish DOTT without looking up anything (fucking love it), but I'm afraid I'll spend my time looking solutions up because I'm stuck all the time.

In my humble opinion: If you solved DOTT on your own, you're ready for every modern adventure game.

This developer has a bunch of free jam games on Itch.io. Maybe these might give you an idea of what to expect?

Haven't tried anything else myself, but The Inanimate Mr. Coatrack was worth playing.
Also I've never really got into Monkey Island because I was stuck right away, and watching speed runs and explanations about the mechanics told me I couldn't have solved by myself anyway...
There's another adventure game I loved, Simon the Sorcerer, that's beside DOTT my greatest adventure game love. Now I want to pick that up again haha.

I don't remember Monkey Island being any harder than DOTT. I love both games equally. :D

A classic to be sure! You can find the "25th Anniversary Editions" of both Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2 on Steam and GOG. There's also Simon the Sorcerer 3D, which I never played, and apparently a new prequel game in the works.
Of course, if you've still got original copies of any of these games somewhere, you can play them using ScummVM.
Now I want to pick that up again haha.
This one is on the easy side and dirt cheap right now:
