XWVM is a re-implementation mod for STAR WARS - X-Wing made in Unity, allowing you to get a better experience on modern platforms. A first Alpha build has been released for Linux and Windows.
Unlike OpenMW for Morrowind, it's not a full game engine remake. They do supply a HD asset pack though, so you can make it look a lot fancier and more modern, but it's entirely optional. The main point is just to preserve the classic to easily run it on modern platforms. As the mod developers describe on Mod DB:
XWVM is a facilitator app to play Star Wars X-Wing from Lucas Arts and Totally Games. We are re-implementing the executable to extend the game beyond its original hardware support. The app requires the player to own and have installation of the original X-Wing game, or have the GOG or Steam versions of X-Wing Special Edition (either the 1993 floppy, the 1994 CD, and/or 1998 Windows edition). The team of fans developing XWVM is not associated with Lucasfilm Ltd or Disney, and XWVM is not an official Star Wars product. XWVM isn't a standalone game, or total conversion, but a tool to play the original product. XWVM neither contains nor distributes any copyrighted material. All game resource files (missions, voice overs, SFX, MIDI music, in-game graphics and 3D models, etc) are loaded from the player's copy of the original game, or are replacements originally created by our team, where the original resources are considered inadequate for today's standards.
You can see some comparisons in the videos they put up:

You do need the original game to supply the files it needs. You can buy it from:
And grab the project itself from Mod DB.
Wonderful to see another classic reborn.

I never played the old one, but I would definitely play this.
Also, Unity – yet another missed opportunity.
I'm not going to touch this one, although I won't gripe if it can bring forward a new generation of rebels, right now would actually be an excellent time, the Death Star isn't fully operational yet ;)
PS.: Yeah I heard that allegedly Stormtrooper EM-88TR has been grounded... for now.

Do I get extra-credit if I have all of those, plus a few minor variants?
I don't remember I played X-Wing much apart from Tie Fighter Vs. - I always felt Epic was superior in gameplay, though.

Only problem I've found so far is that my lasers don't make sound. I can hear music and tie fighters roaring by but no sound from my weapons. Textures seem sort of washed out but other than that, I'm impressed.
Edit- seems the audio issue only happens when playing the classic version.

and use x-wing collector series 98 fron gog

Also remember there is a Tie Fighter (arguably the better game) Total Conversion (approaching 100K downloads, and with a 9.8 score) as well which I believe can also be made to run on Linux: https://www.moddb.com/mods/tie-fighter-total-conversion-tftc
