Flick Shot Rogues is a turn-based tactical roguelike about flicking your characters across the map, to bump into enemies. It's clever and a new favourite. Disclosure: a key was provided to GamingOnLinux.

You've played with a deck of cards, you've dropped balls down boards filled with pins - but have you flicked your characters around a map like they're in a big crossbow before? Probably not. It's incredibly inventive with the game mechanics and really is a joy to play. Also works perfectly on Desktop Linux PCs with Proton and it's Steam Deck Verified.

What is it? A turn-based strategy roguelike where you fight across small arena boards by flicking your characters around, as they bounce off the walls and into enemies dealing damage.

Each character you control has different abilities and you only have one on the board at a time. You switch between them at any time before you flick them, so it's up to you to make the most out of each flick to properly use their abilities as best you can. It's not punishing in the difficulty, but it certainly can be a challenge when you have an assortment of enemies of the board with their own abilities too. You also have to constantly think about the turn after yours, for where you'll end up after your flick and what trouble you might land into with enemy movements.

During your run you also get to pick up powerful items, talents, curses and more with various effects that can be rather game-changing and perhaps even a little game-breaking at times when you become a bit ridiculously powerful on your flicks. Each run is fresh too since it's a roguelike with the enemies and items to collect being shuffled about. The setup is similar to Slay the Spire and FTL with you picking nodes on a map which could be a fight, a campfire to heal, an event and so on.

Especially nice when you get a good trick-shot in, and manage to set off some chain reactions as you watch enemies burn and bump into each other to see the burning spread to others. And, as you progress you can unlock more characters for future runs too each with their own abilities.

One thing I do feel is missing is a clearer way to see how much damage you're going to deal or be dealt, especially versus how much health each enemy has. I love that in games like Slay the Spire, where you get shown what they're doing. Other than that, no issues with it at all. I enjoy the challenge of it, although some of the curses can be real tricky to deal with.

It really is supremely satisfying to get some good shots in on this one. It easily gets its teeth into you for that just one-more-run feeling. It feels quite like playing some sort of combat billiards, your mouse is the cue and your characters are your white ball to smash into the others.

This definitely gets the GamingOnLinux seal of approval. Go buy it and flick some people around.

Game Highlights:

  • Super-satisfying gameplay where you literally flick your hero into battle!
  • Turn-based tactical depth - make sure you always think ahead!
  • Unleash crazy combos as your attacks ricochet across the board!
  • Enemies and rewards reshuffle after each defeat!

There’s an option in the settings to show enemy health, so you can at least pick your targets accordingly since you know how much damage your own attacks deal.

Oh is there? I never noticed, I don't believe the game even tells you that - should just be the default IMO.
