Valve have updated Steam Link VR to bring support for streaming games to PICO and HTC headsets, plus new info on the experimental Linux support.

In the announcement Valve mentioned it will now work across PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4, PICO Neo 3, HTC Vive Focus Vision and HTC VIVE XR Elite (later this year). All those in addition to the already supported Meta Quest headsets.

The app has been added to the stores for both vendors, and Valve confirmed they're working on a fresh SteamVR Beta with a Steam Link APK for other hardware manufacturers to validate Steam Link on their headsets themselves, and to allow users of unsupported headsets to try it out too.

All part of Valve's ongoing work to make PC VR as accessible as possible.

Earlier in September we had a GamingOnLinux article about how Steam Link VR appeared to work on Linux in the latest updates, with Valve not mentioning it anywhere. That's now changed, and has become just a little bit more official. On the help page for Steam Link VR, the FAQ has been expanded to note the Linux status as experimental.

For Linux support Valve said:

Steam Link VR Uses Vulkan Video, and driver support for Vulkan Video is only available in the newest drivers. Please use NVIDIA drivers 575.64.05 or newer or if AMD, please use Mesa drivers [25.2.2] or newer.

Hopefully Valve will sometime soon make PC VR even more interesting with the Steam Frame.

At least we know it's official! That's good news! Although Vulkan Video is an interesting way to do it...

It's nice that they're increasing support for more autonomous headset.

I have a use case that unfortunately is really niche (in the VR space, which is already a niche I suppose…). I'd like to use my "main" computer to run VR games, and use them with a VR headset connected on another computer. The point being, I have some HTC gear (Cosmos + wireless kit) that *only* works on windows, and my main gaming system is not running windows anymore.

I thought I could do something with Steam Link between Steam on two computer, but alas, VR is not officially supported in that case. Maybe some day.
