Firaxis Games have heard your cries, and so Civilization VII is getting an update at some point to let you play as one civ continuously through the Ages.

So, you know, like you would actually expect from a Civilization game instead of the incredibly divisive ages system that transforms your civ into something else as you progress. It was always an odd move for Civilization VII, as they tried to mix up the gameplay with competition from the likes of Humankind and other 4x games.

In an announcement the devs talked about some major changes including "dramatic changes to the Legacy Paths and Victories" that will "open up the game and provide many new paths your empire can follow while achieving greatness and competing for victory". The bigger one has "been one of the most requested features from players - we're internally playtesting ways to play as one civ continuously through the Ages, allowing you to choose a civilization from any Age and guide them throughout your journey through history".

On top of all that the Naval Update will come with version 1.3.0 on November 3rd which includes a new ship, a new building, new resources and terrain types, naval combat upgrades and lots more.

Let's see how it's executed before we call this a win.

Ok, I didn't expect this to happen.

As this was the one thing that made me boycott the game so far, I wonder if what's left of Civ VII is worth buying, considering I already got Civ VI. Is there anything that's both new and exciting in VII?

This should make the players happy. The original approach was more historically accurate but I imagine not as satisfying from a game-playing perspective. I wonder if they will leave players the choice of which approach they wish to use?

After getting into Old World (Linux native on Steam!), I can never go back to Civ... The careful thought put into the design just is not comparable to Civ anymore. It is also updated almost monthly with balance, UI and modding support. For flashy features like sci-fi setting or magic and heroes, I would consider other 4Xs, but for the core Civ-like experience, this is it for me...
The last few months they've even been organizing the 2025 community tournament, which is an open tournament in a 1V1 format which has been followed and commentated by community members on Youtube/Twitch.
Truly the best in this format of games right now...
