Even though they were told constantly to delay the release, developer vedinad who made Megabonk has clearly cut through the noise with it now a mega success. I really love it, you can see some thoughts in the previous GamingOnLinux article.

Just as the game was releasing the developer put up a short video to note how "Everyone has been warning me not to release my game today. Because my game launches in the middle of other massive games." (with the video showing the likes of Hades II, Silksong and Borderlands 4). The developer continues to say "Basically, I have to delay my game — is what I would say if I was a little ***. I don't care. Boom. Megabonk is out now".

Clearly, they were a little insane. Then again, so is every game developer. Nothing is a guaranteed success, it doesn't matter if you're a huge publisher or a solo developer, sometimes it's just pure luck. In this case, they were just onto something great. As the developer posted on X, in two weeks they've made a million sales.

Just to put it into some wider perspective for you. It's had an all-time player peak of 117,336 which it hit on October 5th, which is a little bit more than Hades II has ever seen. And not far off half of the all-time peak for Borderlands 4, which was a massively anticipated game from a huge publisher with lots of marketing.

It's just seriously impressive that we keep seeing these smaller games come along with a tweak on a popular idea, and hit it big like this.

Anyway, Megabonk is cool. Go play it.

After reading the glowing review in GoL, I thought Megabonk might be something that I would enjoy. I stumbled across this developer's blog on YouTube which convinced me I had to buy the game. For me, this stands out as one of the funniest devlogs I have ever watched:

That is hilarious. Not my kind of game, but I hope he does well!
