Filled up with eccentric characters, tricky foes, plenty of jokes, and a lot of pop culture references - The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles (TCHDC) sounds fun.

A rather unique take on dungeon crawling too. It's equal parts a throwback to the golden age of dungeon crawling as it is its own thing. Featuring a unique fusion of turn-based strategy for the battles that blends in some twitch-based arcade styled action. I can't think of any other game that mashes things together in the way that TCHDC does. First highlighted here on GamingOnLinux back in July 2025.

It's releasing still on October 23rd, but now they have an even fresher demo available. With support for Native Linux and Steam Deck. Check out the new trailer too:

What's new in this demo includes:

  • Saves wiped! Major game rebalance: as a result, old saves had to be deleted. Don’t panic—this should be the last time!
  • New combat intro! Doesn’t change the gameplay but adds the right dose of tension before every battle.
  • Improved journal: clearer, prettier, and more useful.
  • Tactical battle pause: you can now pause while still observing the battlefield to better plan your strategy. Not available for the Destroyer (you wanted it hard, right?).
  • Tweaked enemy combat styles: small adjustments to make them more interesting (and less predictable).
  • Adjusted some Hero powers.
  • Various bugfixes: weapons that behave as they should, recipes now complete, typos fixed, and the game exploding a bit less… all thanks to the reports from many players!

Played the earlier demo, and I'm really looking forward to the 1.0 release. Normally I'm not interested in roguelikes, pop culture references, or arcade games. But the developers put their own spin on this combination and made TCHDC fun to play! I found myself doing the "just one more" game hook that's rare for an older gamer like me.

Easy on the brain, decent story, the timed-hit mechanism wasn't too challenging for slowed eyes and reflexes. I'll definitely be playing it on release.
