Creator of the popular free and open source video game library manager Playnite has a positive update on a Linux version, with plans for it during 2026.

Back in February, GamingOnLinux covered the latest update from the creator on their plans for it, where they noted "To sum this up, Linux version is definitely something I plan to work on in future, it's just going to happen later than originally planned.".

Seems this may come just a bit sooner than expected, as per the latest update from the developer:

"2025 update 2

I'm planning to move to Linux in 2026 after P11 is done, and since Playnite is my personal blocker for the move, I will try to make some Linux version in 2026. Definitely not fully featured version on parity with Windows version of P11, and probably desktop mode only, but something daily drivable with Linux specific features (Wine/Proton integration for example).

If that goes well, I'll start looking into P11 Avalonia porting proper say I mentioned in previous update."

Hopefully their Linux move and work on Playnite for Linux go well. See more about Playnite on their website.

Playnite on Linux would be great since there's probably going to be more users that move from Windows to Linux that would like to have this program available because of the many features that they use on it.

So, the dev will create a Linux version because dev wants to switch to Linux? That's a new one.

I was in that boat when I first switched to linux. It was disappointing to not have access to Playnite anymore so this is great news. I'm curious how it'll work with Heroic, it'd be nice if Heroic didn't have to open to launch a game.

As good a reason as any other to develop a Linux version, I guess. Another convert!

'Video game library manager', huh? Well, we already have Lutris, Heroic, and Steam, but I suppose another one wouldn't hurt. I mean, there's something like half a million desktop environments, so ecosystem fragmentation isn't anything new.

I see a large overlap between that and Lutris.
Not sure if there is enough difference to be worth the effort instead of joining up with the existing projects.

While desktop mode only I do hope later on he can look into adding the big picture mode

For now big picture mode on steam does a good job of thst for me, and I use boilR to add my heroic/lutris games onto steam, if you add your steamgrid api key it will even sort all the artwork out

I do wish valve would add ambient background music to big picture and steamOS. They could even have a selection of music on the points store!

Never heard of Playnite, but looks like it's another game library app. Hopefully this one uses QT, AFAIK the others all use GTK>=3 which sucks.

I use playnite to have some control of what I have. It's an excelent backlog tool. I'm getting very emotional by this update! For now I run it inside a win VM. Ah, I also use it to randonly pick my next game.

Neat, I used to use this under Windows and it was a fun app that had lots of useful plugins that let you basically hook up everything into it.

People should go have a look at all the plugins, you'll be surprised as to what it could do, basically had everything you could imagine in one when it came to gaming.

Lutris is pretty much a dead project. Besides Playnite offers TONS of features over anything like Lutris and the guy adding Proton/WINE support is the cherry on top. I welcome Playnite to Linux

Great!
Well, so i can stop with my own python based game library.

@Sil_el_mot or publish it and hope it helps others.
There seems to be quite some demand.
Doesn't need to be open source or free software, you could publish it under whatever license and/or conditions you would like.
There appears to be demand, maybe you could serve that demand.

What ton of Features so we get from Play it that we can't get from heroic and RetroArch?
Usually people tell me that they find too many settings confusinf and want a turn key solution

@LoudTechie
i am not near the point i want to be before publishing it. and i am not sure at all if i should.it is heavily done with the help of ai (did it before without ai but since chatgpt and gemini are a thing i started off from scratch) and therefore the code might be annoying at best

Oooh! I see that Playnite successfully does the one thing I really miss from Steam: showing me what the game is.
With a large library full of random things gotten from various bundles, it can be really time-consuming just figuring out what kind of game something in my Steam library is. Steam's game page only shows things that are useful for when I already know what the game is, but nothing to help me remember why I would want to play it.
