Talking point - what have you be playing recently?

Hello GamingOnLinux readers! It's time again to open up the floor as they say so jump into the comments and give your latest recommendations.

I don't think I really need to talk much more about what I've been playing, because it's quite obviously ARC Raiders whenever I get the chance to. I now have somehow lost 45 hours of my life to this thing, to the point where I've been dreaming about running through it. How wild. This is also another great excuse to show off some more cool screenshots I took during my runs of it. You might have spotted the dance party me and a few other random groups had in the recent Proton Experimental update article too.

ARC Raiders is just screenshot bait quite often, it really does some fantastic things with lighting and world-building that I keep coming across things thinking "oooh cool!", and then bang — dead. Another raider comes over to take everything from me, although I went in with a free loadout. Hah, sucker! Enjoy your nothing!

Here's a few snaps a took recently:

Apologies to the partner, they had to buy a copy because I'm so hooked on it. But hah, now they are too!

ARC Raiders is doing some impressive numbers on Steam too, hitting an all-time peak player count of 462,488 recently. That's a lot, especially when you consider it's a multi-platform game. It's been beating the likes of Battlefield 6 and Rust, even coming pretty close to the constant player count of PUBG.

So, what have you been playing lately (and why isn't it ARC Raiders?).

I recently picked up WH40K: Darktide on sale, so I've been enjoying replaying that. I used to have it on Gamepass when it first came out, but thankfully I was able to actually buy it this time, and for half the price of a monthly Gamepass subscription. emoji It's basically Left 4 Dead in the Warhammer 40K universe, with some extra RPG-style character progression.

Other than that, I'm still trying to catch up on Vampire Survivors DLC, and have also been mixing in some Megabonk here and there. I have been hearing a lot about Arc Raiders lately though (and not just on here lol) so maybe I'll give that a shot next payday.

Not that much time for games sadly, so I've been mostly playing "short-ish sessions" titles.

  • [Drill Core](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2821800/Drill_Core/) - fun mix of management and tower defence with dwarven humour

  • [GODBREAKERS](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2687400/GODBREAKERS/) - scratches my risk of rain 2 itch (and actually works unlike ror2)

  • [Day Of The Shell](https://store.steampowered.com/app/3008340/Day_of_the_Shell/) - turn-based puzzle shooter? (disclosure: I know some of the people who worked on it)

I'm a bit embarrassed to say, but Avatar Frontiers of Pandora.
It's total Ubislop (people call it Far Cry Pandora), but it looks really good on my system and the repetitive "base capping" gameplay is actually pretty fun.
Sometimes I'm flying around floating islands on my dragon dragon in 4K HDR and Avatar film officially licensed euphoric world music comes on and the whole experience really hits.

Thanks to WiVRn and the SteamVR beta, I've finally been able to comfortably play VR on Linux. I've sunken some time into Batman: Arkham VR, Beat Saber and Half-Life: Alyx as a result.

Outside of that, I've been playing Crysis 1 Remastered and plan to focus on Jedi: Fallen Order after that.

For me, I've been playing:
Xonotic
Counter Strike 2
Beyond All Reason: One of the best RTS games out there, and it's open source, which makes it even greater.

This two weeks I've been playing Arc Raiders, it is an amazing game. Started skeptical because I didnt like escape from tarkov 2 years ago, but Im so hooked with Arc. I played Dispatch too, for now one of my favourites of this kind of game (and played honkai star rail).

Recently:

Battlefield 6

Played more than 110 hours just after the release. It was a really nice experience despite being a game from the likes of EA. And yes I had to dual-boot just to play this game.

Now:

Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

Have been enjoying myself alternating between these two for the past days.

Just finished playing and recording for YouTube Mafia the definitive version. That was played in Cachy OS Xfce Edition. I've just recorded two parts of Mafia The Old Country, missed out Mafia 2 and three, as Mafia 2 the Definitive edition is not as good graphically nor gameplay wise as the first game. Mafia 3 Definitive Edition has copyrighted music, even when you switch off music in the settings.

Currently playing and recording Mafia Old Country in Xubuntu 24.04, which I am dual booting with Cachy OS Xfce Edition and Linux Mint Xfce 22.2 Zara is my main everyday driver. I still have Alone In The Dark 2024 version to complete, which I'll probably get around to finishing sometime next year.

I'm interested on your feedback, cause I need a new updated distro and I'm hesitating with the same 3 distro you use. Did you have any issue with any of those?
I was very happy with xubuntu back in the days, and also with mint ^^ I'm looking into CachyOS for the gaming optimisation, but I also enjoy the ease of use from Mint, and the lightweight approach of Xubuntu as well as it's simple and customizable UI.

Other than that I'm pretty tired and can't really focus on games anymore. Casual aoe2 with a friend, and recently replayed rise of tomb raider and shadow of tomb raider.
Also replayed a few megadrive/genesis games recently on emulator. Wiz&Liz, Steel Empire, Sonic 1 and Tiny Toons all stars (the one with sports).

Digimon Story: Time Stranger. Why are the Digimon Story games so good? There's no need for them to be so good but they are. Also a bunch of WRC 9 because rally would be a fantastic sport were it not for the environmental damage it causes. And, lastly, some Neverwinter Nights 2 with Kaedrin's newly updated PrC pack. I'm not very interested in the remake because the original is fantastic and there's a bunch of content which may not work so well with the remake.

Mostly Fields of Mistria (Stardew Valley, but fantasy), Melvor Idle (Oldschool Runescape themed spreadsheet), and Hades Revisited on Luanti (terraforming in a world of ash and lava, very much still in development).

Been playing The Outer Worlds 2. Fun game, not "woke" like some are saying, and runs great on desktop Linux and the Steam Deck.

Also, many hours of Animal Crossing: New Leaf on my Nintendo 3DS.
