It's splitting time? TimeSplitters Rewind has released for free and it should work just fine on Linux / SteamOS thanks to Proton. They said: "Sorry it's taken us so long. We've only been making the largest free content video game ever", that's a little…cheeky to say given some of the many other free games out there but okay.

Quite a weird one because as a fan game it's part remake and part successor to the classics. They consider it "Early Access" since it's not finished but there's a lot of content there already.

Early Access Features

  • 28 Maps.
  • Online and Offline Story Mode.
  • 51 Arcade Leagues.
  • 32 Challenges.
  • 96 Characters.
  • 41 Weapons.
  • 20 Arcade Game Modes.
  • New Game Mode - Team Elimination.
  • Updated Game Mode - Last Stand.
  • Online and Offline Arcade w/Bots.
  • 10 Players Online.

I've given it a test today and with Proton 10 it appears to work quite well. Just download it from their Indie DB page, extract the zip into your downloads and then add "TimeSplittersRewind.exe" as a Non-Steam game. Once added, simply go into the Properties for it and then to Compatibility, tick the box and select Proton 10 from the drop-down. Practically the same steps as Option 2 in our Battle.net for Linux / SteamOS guide (seems like we need a more generic guide…soon).

On the website they note "Free? Yes - all for free. No hidden costs, no microtransactions". Not a surprise, since it's entirely based on using someone else's IP. Embracer Group currently hold the rights to it, so it will be interesting to see if they pull out the lawyer card and end up getting it eventually taken down. Using existing IP is always a big risk.

I pray they add splitscreen onto this at some point, feels wrong not having it on a timesplitters game
