A lovely blast from the past of 2015, Nuclear Throne from the revived Vlambeer has update #100 out now with some major additions and improvements. Originally founded by Rami Ismail and Jan Willem Nijman, nowadays Nijman owns 100% of the company after Ismail sold their part in it back in 2024.
Going back 10 years ago, Nuclear Throne was easily one of the most popular games in its genre. To this day, it's easily still one of the best too. Valve have also now given it a re-test and they've given it the green tick of Steam Deck Verified approval. It does have a Native Linux version, but Valve set it to use Proton 10.
The main highlights of it include:
- A thirteenth character: Cuz is not afraid to show his emotions, with a Cry ability that tears through enemies and projectiles alike. Oh, and he gets to carry 3 (three) weapons.
- Custom mode, allowing you to modify Nuclear Throne to your liking, create unique runs and challenges, and to get to know the game better than ever before.
- New unlockable C-skins for every character (and new achievements for these).
- Localization for 15 languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, BR Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Ukrainian, Turkish, & Dutch. Tell your friends around the world!
- The game now supports up to 4 player local co-op.
- Co-op reviving has been reworked and now works with Revive Chests.
- Co-op Ultra Mutations have been slightly changed to work with 2-4 characters.
- Reworked and re-organized the settings menu.
- The game now runs at 60+ fps (but 30 is still supported for the true believers).
- Widescreen support.
- New side art and a new cursor.
- Open Mind has been buffed a little.
- Mutations and weapons in the HUD now show information on hover.
- The GO button in the menu has been replaced with a cool little icon. This was done
to save money on localizationso that we could fit Cuz in!- We are now Steam Deck™ Verified.
- Updates Mac build to run on 64-bit devices including Apple Silicon.
- Gamepads should work better, especially on computers with a bunch of them connected.
- Community leaderboards site Thronebutt has gotten a beautiful overhaul!
- Many more little fixes and quality of life changes that you might already know from the beta branch. Full changelog can be found here.
- We forgot to add any secrets. Sorry.
