The first release of the 590 driver branch has arrived in Beta for Linux with 590.44.01 now available for those willing to give it a test. For those of you with an NVIDIA GPU that need the most stable experience, you should probably stick with driver 580.105.08 from early November.

Here's the full changelog provided by NVIDIA:

  • Raised the minimum supported Wayland version to 1.20.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the PowerMizer preferred mode dropdown menu in the nvidia-settings control panel from functioning correctly on Wayland.
  • Raised the minimum supported glibc version to 2.27.
  • Improved the performance of recreating Vulkan swapchains. This helps prevent stuttering when resizing Vulkan application windows.
  • Raised the minimum supported X.Org xserver version to 1.17 (video driver ABI version 19).
  • Fixed a bug that caused the Dots Per Inch (DPI) to be incorrectly reported for some monitors such as the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9.
  • Fixed several problems that prevented Vulkan applications from working on Venus VirtIO virtual GPU.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause system freezes on PREEMPT_RT kernels.

Does this Beta driver have a fix you've been waiting on? If not, what are you waiting on?

Update 03/12/25 10:31 UTC - NVIDIA have updated their website so that Maxwell, Pascal and Volta are no longer listed in the Supported Products page for this driver. When the Beta initially released they were still listing them but as they previously announced they're no longer supported in the 590+ series.

This driver won't support 10 series and earlier any more, correct? Then why are they still listed in the 'supported products' section on the Nvidia website?

Either they're still going to support them this time, or they completely forgot to update their own documentation on it for Linux.

No problems, so nothing in the changelog for me and nothing to really wait in the future except once the vulkan extension for descriptor_heap thing gets actually released and the driver with it comes out. DX12(vkd3d-proton) perf improvement thingy

It seems they forgot the information about Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta based GPUs now being supported only on 580 series.

And wouldn't 590 series be the one with many new things, and wayland related optimizations etc?

The list of supported GPUs did not change it seems:

Good to see the small struggling tech company NVIDIA being able to push out some nice fixes, BUT we still have completely broken DX12 performance bug with MANY games (as per nvidia forum big thread about it).

They can't fix that until Vulkan does (also as per nvidia forum big thread about it).

I must congratulate @Liam, doitsuijn and Linus with the fact that this exchange is possible on this forum and commend @phil995511 for spotting the difference from so little information.
Spoiler, click me
Both Linux and Windows can run DX12 games, but when Linux has an issue with them the problem is DXVK or a Vulcan issue and when Windows has a problem it's a driver and kernel issue.

Still waiting for the fix for DX12 games on Linux, as I'm currently using a 4080 on my computer.

But glad to see they beginning to fix some of the long standing issues with Nivida drivers.

And then I can get off Windows for the 4080 and basically use Linux for all the computers I own.
