Generative AI is everywhere, and now it may be in your browser plugins too. The popular Augmented Steam recently had some backlash due to VaporLens integration.

What is Augmented Steam? A browser plugin that adds various extra helper features when browsing Steam like expanded pricing details, more filters, the ability to skip age gates, adds useful links to other websites and lots more. But with release v4.5.0 they added in VaporLens integration.

VaporLens is a site that uses Generative AI / LLMs to analyse Steam user reviews and provide various summaries and other details.

Augmented Steam enabled it by default, which caused a fair amount of discussion amongst users to the point the developer put up a poll on GitHub to ask users about keeping it. With 158 votes, 66% voted to keep it. Lots of comments talking about it, like how it was added and enabled without any notification - it was just there as part of Augmented Steam.

With the latest release v4.6.0 the developer decided to keep it in, it's still enabled by default too but "in a collapsed state". So the only thing that has changed is that people who want it now need to click to expand it, everyone else still needs to either disable the feature or use a different plugin if you don't want to support generative AI being added to more things.

I switched to the SteamDB extension instead of Augmented Steam when this was first pushed out. It works great.

This looks superb, and I'll likely do the same. But one feature I'll miss is the big banner that Augmented Steam puts across any game that has Denuvo. I also like the pop-up that overlays the entire game page if it uses AI.

Agreed. Denuvo is an instant no-buy and I appreciate its visibility.

I've disabled AI in Augmented Steam for now but if SteamDB gets parity I'll switch to that in a heartbeat.

So weird to see backlash over features like this, I don't use these kinds of tools, but this is a feature that'd at least make me interested.

That being said, I never read the reviews on Steam except for the meme reviews anyways.

However Amazon also has an AI thing that summarizes reviews, and I find it really useful.

Yeah, I'm sure Amazon would never set LMM system prompts to downplay negative reviews in summaries for bad products it needs to get out of their warehouses, or on low quality products with high profit margins... /sarcasm

If the browser extension gets a referral kickback for any games sold when using it's extension, there is no reason to believe they wont manipulate the AI summaries to get you to purchase more games as well.

There's many reasons for the backlash. While some people just jump on the "AI bad" side of the discourse, there is also the issue of the validity of the summary (an extremely weak point of LLM-based reviews that most people gloss over), and the issue of putting a very large summary in front of the actual reviews. Some people enjoy writing these and try to make these interesting; there is less enjoyment for them if they try to write something insightful just to feed a machine that will output bullet points.

I know *I* will not bother too much with game reviews on Steam from now on for that reason.

The new default settings to have this collapsed mostly avoid this issue, and people that still wants it regardless can open it once (the extension remembers the last state). It can make a good difference, because some people just assumed that this was a new integral part of the review system and stopped there without questions.

How do you know if the review summary matches the reviews? That's the issue with AI summaries. They can be good if you're familiar with the topic at hand (a summary at the end of a meeting you've taken part in). They are terrible if you're not (like the non-proofread summary of a meeting the reader have not taken part in).

I like that pop-up too, I've just used the user script covered by GOL previously for that. Denuvo banner is a bummer, I agree, though I get by with the "denuvo watch" curator, shows up as "Recommended against by Curators you follow" under "Is this game relevant to you?".

I mean, offhand, it sounds kind of like FakeSpot (one of Mozilla's unloved and abandoned acquisitions).
I think analyzing patterns in things like reviews is supposed to be something AI is actually good at. Though that's not to say I necessarily trust this implementation of it.
Actually reading reviews is also still important and I agree that summaries should not be placed over them.

Can't be bothered. I just go to the IsThereAnyDeal site for most of that info. So this plugin doesn't interest me.

I don't trust LLM summaries. They are woefully inaccurate and have to be double-checked for accuracy. I've found that, most of the time, they substitute unrelated info and create a false report.

While some might see me as the resident "AI defender", my point over the last year has been that generally people are neutral to positive on AI and thus it will move forward. I don't love or hate AI, I simply want to hammer home the point that while there is a vocal minority that hate everything AI, the market will dictate AI's adoption. And I'll even admit to perverse incentives, but that doens't change the reality.

While 158 people voting does not mean much of anything, it is none-the-less another point on the chart we can use to extrapolate the accuracy of my position (the market will win).

It's ironic seeing the majority of votes being in favor of AI usage. Everything tech-related is getting prohibitively expensive because of it. I could sort of understand those that were pro generative AI / LLM before, but now it's nonsense to defend what is leading the tech industry to its doom (at least for the regular users), and I'm not even talking about the whole climate issues that are going on for three years at this point.

Yeah, it's important to remember that even if you like AI, it will either price you out of a PC in a couple more years, or you accept that a £2000 PC now costs £6000 and that's just the happy price of a "useful" tool. And you also have to stick your head in the sand about the environmental impact, smack bang in the middle of a climate crisis.

Sadly, there are plenty of ostriches about, so that last point won't be a problem at least. Unless you live on the coast.

I just use the SteamDB plug-in. The Augmented Steam one just seemed like overkill to me. I get the ITAD e-mails. Though that's mainly for the free shit. lol

It doesn't really matter what one thinks of the impact AI has. It is here and it will stay.
You won't be getting lower prices if you become a luddite trying to fight the direction the wind blows in.

The question is how do you adapt to it:
Not at all and fall by the wayside when it comes to job opportunities, productivity, etc. (at least in the sectors touched by AI, which is like 99% of tech).
Or look at it reasonably, and at least learn to be able to use it efficiently if not outright learning how to develop it.

The doom you are talking about will be similar to the dotcom bubble burst.
Was there an overwhelming hype about the internet and all things online, leading to absurd investments in turn leading to futility and all kinds of other negative effects? Sure.
But when the bubble burst, did the internet go away? Certainly not.

The same is going to happen with AI. Right now we see the bubble grow.
Rather soon (I hope) we'll see it pop.
And then we'll see regular adaptation of AI in ways that are a bit less "clueless managers jumping on bandwagons" and a bit more "ah, yes, this makes sense".

I like/use both. This particular use of "AI" doesn't bother me much, although I agree with many of the arguments against it in general. In a similar vein, I hate that so much bot traffic makes the web worse for us humans, but I like being able to use bots that pull ProtonDB info or show where the cheapest price is into the Steam page for me.

I guess following the actual curator for Denuvo Watch is done from here:
