PayPalHere's a small bit of news but an interesting one for the upcoming Steam Frame from Valve, as Linaro recently revealed they're supporting Valve with it. We don't yet have any better details on when the Steam Frame will release, just sometime this year.
In a short statement they said:

Linaro has spent the last fifteen years bringing companies and the open-source community together in the Arm ecosystem to build and deploy innovative Linux-based technology. Linaro is proud to have supported the recently announced Steam Frame on open-source Linux development and looks forward to continuing to support Linux on Arm gaming devices in the future.
There's a whole lot going on behind the scenes on the bring-up for the Steam Frame, like how Valve have been funding FEX to get x86 games on Arm Linux. We also found out recently that Valve's version of Android on Linux (based on Waydroid) is now called Lepton. On top of that we had the open source consultancy firm Igalia also announce their work towards both the Steam Frame and Steam Machine.

I honestly can't wait for the Steam Frame to come out, been wanting to get into VR for a long time but couldn't decide on a headset, and this one feels like my dreams come true.
My inner nerd especially appreciates the amount of work Valve put in to improve Linux on ARM – I already tried out FEX on a device of mine running postmarketOS, and it worked surprisingly well – especially for Jackbox games!

I really wish they would have done better with the names here. I am literally their number 1 target audience, and I can never remember which is the "frame" and which is the "machine" the names are so utterly generic and meaningless. I suppose its just because they're all coming out at the same time .. The "deck" you could say is also generic but it was the only thing they were releasing at the time.

And in the near future - Steam Pocket. The first true Linux phone with decent performance! (of course advertised as only for gaming, so Google should be OK with it... In the same sense like Steam Machine is just Linux PC so Sony and Microsoft also should be OK with it;)

Waiting for this too. This would make my setup 100% Linux ready. Only VR was an issue as support for the Sony PSVR2 isn't there yet. And the Frane is native. Very cool.

I've been daily driving the FLX1 for almost a year and it's fantastic. Don't really game on it though, apart from chess and the like.
It's incredibly liberating to be free of Google, using Linux 😀
As for the Frame, really looking forward to getting one.

The ARM SteamOS project runs so deep huh, I honestly have been less apprehensive about the adoption towards this architecture as of late since so much work is being put into compatibility for it. Hopefully this can help keep hardware budgets at least a bit somewhat in check.

I've only had a Pine Phone, which was not and there's just no comparison to my FLX1. You can read the reviews on their web site or join the Telegram channel. Support is first class.
The problem is just as always third party software compatibility(and this time also less expensive competition).
It's running Debian so either install from the command line or Gnome "Software", including Flatpaks. The Android container (Andromeda) runs F-Droid, Aurora Store, whatever and compatibility's pretty good (Integrity API is a no go, obviously). The Wife's due a new phone so I tried Whatsapp for her and that worked, so I may get her a new FLX1s and she can ditch Google as well.

I have it on my radar, but I'm still sceptical, and after having tried the PinePhone and the Librem 5 I'm also more conservative on money spending for phones.

Some do work though according to reports in the Telegram channel. I've never done banking on a phone. Camera is decent and will be improved in time with post processing. Battery is excellent for me, for example overnight it loses about 5%. I'm not a heavy user and could go a few days without charging but tend to top it up everyday to about 80%. The PinePhone lasted a few hours, doing nothing!

Edit: my FLX1 has NFC (never used!) but the new FLX1s does not.
