Get some brutal retro-FPS goodness to start off 2026 with the recently released 77 map Quake Brutalist Jam III. Bringing you a whole lot of maps to blast through this Quake conversion full of new monsters, weapons and more - it looks absolutely delicious.

Designed to be played with Ironwail, a fork of the popular GLQuake descendant QuakeSpasm with a focus on high performance. It has Native Linux support so you should be good to go on it. Check out the video of it in action below:

From the announcement post:

Quake Brutalist Jam III is a megalithic community project more than a year in the making. It features an entirely new arsenal, a set of new monsters, new powerups, and a complete visual overhaul of Quake's existing roster. The community came out in force, producing an unprecedented 77 maps, pushing the limits of the Quake engine to bring the oppressive, gritty, and beautiful aesthetic of brutalism to life.

The goal for QBJ3 was to make something uniquely ambitious for the community to build with us. Beginning production in the winter of 2024, the team slow-cooked a total conversion mod in (semi) secret. In October 2025 the work-in-progress mod was unleashed upon the community, who spent the next six weeks exploring its tools, testing its limits, and ultimately creating the worlds for the mod to take place in.

Thank you to everyone who made this project possible, either through direct contribution, cheering from the sidelines, badgering us about a release date, or dutifully paying attention to the project. Please enjoy the worlds we've all spent so long crafting.

To run it on Linux you can download the latest version of Ironwail. You will need the .pak files from your Quake install inside a folder named "id1" which you can just put inside wherever you placed Ironwail. The .pak files need to be in lower-case, otherwise it won't work (the Steam version has them in uppercase). Then you can download the mod from their website.

Btw this mod works beautifully with flathub version of LibreQuake which includes Ironwail. You put the mod directory in ~/.var/app/io.github.lavenderdotpet.LibreQuake/data/ and then you can select the mod from the main menu, don't need to think about anything else and don't need to own Quake.

phenomenal mod, can't wait to dig into it more.

After extracting the qbj3 folder from the zip, I opened the mod using: ./ironwail -game qbj3
Quite nice graphics and gameplay. Each level (room) in the main hub turns from white to black after completing.

Well, it seems I cannot reach cloud.umami.is from Italy.
Tried with Chromium (I usually use Librewolf), no way.
Any hint?

Are you using AdGuard? Looks like `umami.is` is blocked in: https://adguardteam.github.io/HostlistsRegistry/assets/filter_1.txt.

Damn, I am using Pi-Hole and totally forgot that!
I will try disabling it for a while.

THANK YOU!

I was only able to get something like 20 minutes in on this yesterday, but damn is it impressive so far. I might just be out of the loop on Quake mods, but I've never seen anything on this scale before in terms of map size. Already stumbled on a couple secrets, can't wait to really dig into it.

On the off chance I actually play through all of this, does anyone have any other recent Quake mods they recommend checking out?

if you've not done the machinegames campaign for the remaster, those are very good. not recent, but arcane dimensions is another classic.

i'm sure the actual quakeheads will have some deeper cuts, but hopefully that gets you started. :)

They have put up a standalone release in their website now, also simply bundles it in with librequake. No need to own Quake and give money to the Microsoft mob indeed :>
