It seems it will be easier to be Steam Machine Verified when compared with Steam Deck Verified, according to a Valve designer speaking with Game Developer.

They spoke with designer Lawrence Yang who said there will be "fewer constraints" noting that if you're already Steam Deck Verified it will be Steam Machine Verified. That was pretty much obvious though don't you think? Valve already do something similar with SteamOS Compatible ratings, they just stick it straight on for other SteamOS machines if a game is Steam Deck Verified.

My hope is that text sizing will once again come into focus for game developers. It's often a big problem on the Steam Deck's smaller screen and resolution, with so many developers only seemingly testing their games on rather big monitors. In some games, the text is even too small on my own big PC monitor when right in front of it. Accessibility should not be such an afterthought. Now think about this issue when you're sitting across the living room on your nice sofa, this could be quite the pain point with lots of games having no text scaling options. You're going to need some binoculars at the ready.

I'm hoping by "fewer constraints" that Yang really just means Valve will be auto-approving if it's Steam Deck Verified. Because if we look at the current Steam Deck Verified requirements, there's not much to relax there:

  • Input - The title should have full controller support, use appropriate controller input icons, and automatically bring up the on-screen keyboard when needed.
  • Display - The game should support the default resolution of Steam Deck (1280x800 or 1280x720), have good default settings, and text should be legible.
  • Seamlessness - The title shouldn’t display any compatibility warnings, and if there’s a launcher it should be navigable with a controller.
  • System Support - If running through Proton, the game and all its middleware should be supported by Proton. This includes anti-cheat support.

Display I imagine is the only one that would actually be relaxed, since we're talking about all sorts of resolutions since the Steam Machine is just a mini PC with SteamOS Linux on it. Input, Seamlessness and System Support cannot be relaxed in any way or the whole system would be a bit pointless.

Going by the current list (SteamDB) as of publishing time, that would mean at least 7,460 titles would be Steam Machine Verified.

It's going to be interesting to see when we can finally get our hands on one. Hopefully Valve will supply GamingOnLinux with review units for ongoing coverage like with the Steam Deck LCD and Steam Deck OLED.

I hope a good scale in 720p is required for full verification, entirely because as much as the high end crowd is already beyond 1080p, a lot of average people still carry ~720p screens around (myself included).
It's still HD and actually looks fine!
Text scaling support is why Baldur's Gate 3 was the only game I played when visiting my sister for Thanksgiving. Even though the TV where my family was staying was 55 inches and I wasn't sitting far from it, I had to sit to the side of the TV causing bad contrast and it also had low pixel density. So I had a hard time reading text in games so I just when though what games I had installed and Baldur's Gate was like the only one with text scaling so that's what I played.

I don't always need accessibility stuff but when I do I'm usually disappointed at what a game supports. Stellar Blade did surprise me with a pretty alright list of stuff you can change. My hand was locking up from fishing you have to spam Square while using the analog stick to fight the fish and then hold the trigger in a certain position to real in the fish. Had to fish a lot for missions and the fact I had to do it quickly caused me pain. Luckily in the Menu you can turn on a setting to have each action turned into a single press so all you have to do use is the analog stick. There is also an option to just change the reeling in part to a timing game instead of holding a specific position.

Also FOV should always be able to go high its accessibility as well. I can't play a lot of games because I get extreme motion sickness from an FOV being to small I usually need a FOV of 110 sometime 90 is fine like in source games. Starting playing the Snowbound mod for borderlands 2 and needed to increase the FOV to 130 not to get motion sick do to that mods increased speed. I don't know if devs use this excuse anymore but it use to be devs would say if we let you increase the FOV to much cut scenes might look wrong. One that's a you problem and two I DON'T CARE IF A CUT SCENE LOOKS A LITTLE WEIRD I WANT TO BE ABLE TO PLAY THE GAME.

text scaling was always a stupid point against verification honestly. it's just too arbitrary. a bunch of indie games with perfectly legible text might have one line that's kind of small and get a tick off of verification, meanwhile games like Elden Ring are composed almost ENTIRELY of tiny text and are verified. should just be removed from the verification process
