Celebrating the first anniversary of Civilization VII, the developers at Firaxis put up a new video and developer blog post going over some big changes coming.

For starters, update 1.3.2 is going live soon which will bring with it various gameplay improvements and quality of life upgades to the game. This includes nested tooltips, empire balancing, AI adjustments to make AI enemy behaviour line up more with each leader's intended personality, a new Appeal Lens that lets you instantly see how appealing any tile is and the return of Gilgamesh into the leader roster free for all players.

A bit further out, the major "Test of Time" update is planned to arrive this Spring. This is the big one, that should bring with it the ability to play through one single civilization through the whole game - something they previously said they were looking into and now it's confirmed. They're also doing a significant rework on how you can achieve victory and the Legacy Paths will be replaced with a system called Triumphs.

With the ability to play through as a single civilization, they said when the Age Transitions happens you'll have the option to select a new civ or to continue as you are into the next age. Seems like a nice idea.

Victory conditions will be a lot clearer since it will put them front and centre at the start, as you progress through being dominant in one of four categories: Military, Economy, Culture, or Science. And, with the Legacy Path replacement with Triumps you can progress through various different optional challenging objectives to make games feel a bit more dynamic.

Improving on the Civilization formula is really not that simple. Change it too much and people complain it's no longer Civilization. Change it too little and people see no reason to upgrade from the previous installment.

Perhaps with some things there comes a point where they are as perfect as can be, and any change will only make them worse. Though I guess plenty people will argue that Civilization VI wasn't at that point yet.
