Taking the retro FPS Dusk and turning it into a retro dungeon crawler with a big sprawling skill tree - Dungeons of DUSK has a demo out now.

It's a sort-of spin-off, taking place initially between Episode 1 and Episode 2 and then later between Episode 2 and Episode 3 of the original Dusk. However, you don't really need to have played Dusk or know much about it. If you enjoy brutal dungeon crawling, you'll likely get along with this one just fine. Especially with the moody atmosphere, the different weapons with their alternate fire modes and the vast upgrade system.

Coming from publisher New Blood Interactive, it's as retro as you would expect. You'll be hunting keys, buttons and secrets while you explore - just like the classics. As you get through the level ups to enable a few more items on the skill tree, you really start to appreciate the design as it becomes a lot more than just moving and shooting in turns. Especially thanks to the mixture of melee and ranged weapons, along with their special abilities.

Full game highlights:

  • A 30 LEVEL CAMPAIGN WITH CHARACTER PROGRESSION AND NPCS
  • ENDLESS ARENA MODE TO TEST YOUR METTLE
  • BOSS RUSH MODE TO TEST YOUR WITS
  • SURVIVAL MODE TO TEST YOUR SANITY
  • NEW ENEMIES TO MESS WITH YOUR HEAD
  • FAMILIAR FOES TO EAT YOUR LEAD
  • THIS IS DUSK RPG... are you... WORTHY?

It has Native Linux support built with Construct 3, so it's using some browser tech to actually run the game. Which results in a little bit of weirdness, but it mostly works okay. Full-screen acted pretty weirdly, forcing me to run it in windowed mode and the Steam Overlay doesn't work at all which is a common issue in Native Linux games built with web tech that Valve still haven't solved for years but apart from that it works well.

Dungeons of DUSK is also Steam Deck Verified.

LOL I had the same weird full screen issues - it kept forcing itself into a small window. But whatever, I don't think I'd play this game on my desktop, I think I'd play this game on my deck where that wouldn't be an issue. Seems perfect for the deck.

I played it for a few mins this morning then promptly uninstalled it. Loved it! It was enough for me to know that I'll be getting it day 1 on launch and can wait patiently until then :)
