Serious Sam: Shatterverse is a new entry into the classic shooter franchise and this one is rather different to all the rest with the focus on co-op madness. Coming from the developer behind Dead By Daylight, who are bringing roguelite twist to the run and gun shooter.

What exactly is it? Serious Sam: Shatterverse is a co-op FPS where five players can team up, blast through shifting universes, stack wild boons, bend the rules with run modifiers and hunt the deadliest forces of Sam’s relentless arch-nemesis, the villainous Mental.

While this game is developed by Behaviour Interactive, newcomers to the Serious Sam universe, the developer has the full blessing of series creators Croteam:

“Seeing Shatterverse come to life is a really big moment for us,” says Croteam’s Davor Hunski, co-creator of Serious Sam. “It's very exciting to see another talented team step in and create something bold, fresh and different within the universe we cherished for so long. I can't wait for both the old and new fans to experience this new interpretation of the series!”

“Our main goal was to respect Serious Sam's rich legacy while presenting it in a fresh, contemporary way unlike anything seen before in the series,” says Behaviour Interactive’s Nic Duchesne. “Working with Devolver has been an incredible, enriching experience for our team. The folks there are real renegades of the video game publishing world: they always put the game first and aren’t afraid to carve their own path.”

Game Highlights:

  • Wield a big, loud, stupid and frankly irresponsible arsenal of weapons, mixing classic Serious Sam guns and all-new toys plucked from the Shatterverse
  • High adrenaline run-and-gun FPS combat with big battlefields, non-stop pressure, a lot of backpedaling and perfectly timed one-liners when everything’s on fire
  • Leans into Serious Sam’s legacy and pushes it forward with procedurally shifted runs across hand-crafted arenas set in previously unexplored worlds
  • Navigate unstable anomalies, hidden portals and high-risk opportunities that can supercharge a run – or end it instantly
  • Push forward for greater rewards, unlock powerful modifiers and take advantage of upgrades that permanently expand your possibilities
  • Face off against massive hordes of enemies including classic Serious Sam foes and fresh monsters under Mental’s control, all begging to be gibbed

Serious Sam 1 and 2 co-op were super fun. I feel like that aspect was not as good in SS3 and SS4? So I hope this one brings the fun back. The trailer looks a lot like these first two classic games from the series.

I have doubts this concept survives meeting the player base. Servers gone within a year?
It'll be a challenge to keep the gameplay fresh for more than a few hours, if it's just going to be Serious Sams blasting away endless hordes on perpetual repeat. Then again, hardpenguin enjoyed the first two games in co-op... although they released more than two decades ago and the 'roguelite co-op shooter' scene has grown exponentially since then and the competition is fierce, not to mention players expect different things today. 🤔
If they cram non-cosmetic monetization into this, or even too much of those - RIP.

LAN parties was relatively rare, so multiplayer meant having social time with friends, we'd often break for food (and it was usually quite a feast as we all enjoyed good food).
So all those memories of co-op was extra good because we were doing it with friends that we knew very well.

I agree in that the standard SS loop won't really scale well to modern-day co-op, but also have to say that the video didn't *feel* like serious sam.

Something looks off with the artstyle to me. From the little gameplay that was shown in this it looks decent but those voiceovers on the trailer are super cringe to me and the artstyle is kinda bland and not consistent.

It seems like the trailer itself can't maintain a consistent 60 fps.

Can't wait to try this! I'm a huge Serious Sam fan, been one since day one. So is my wife. And the kids. I hope they have a 4 pack with a decent rebate at launch so I don't have to pay full price for the whole family.

As far as I remember Valve blocked the creation of multi-packs a good while ago. Something about have games in inventories leading to trading from regions with low regional pricing.

I adore the SS series. Bought the boxed copies of the original games when they first came out in stores and have played them many times over the years. Hard pass on this though, especially since I dislike co-op. Hopefully Serious Sam 5 from Croteam is on the way at some point.
