Stardock Entertainment just announced they're expanding their publishing business for indie game developers, so they might end up funding some cool stuff.
In the press release they noted how competition is insane now with tens of thousands of games releasing all the time, like how Steam alone saw over 20,000 releases. For indie developer it's especially challenging since they need marketing, community managing, and so much more on top of actually making the game and getting it out the door.
"Over the last few years, we have increasingly seen outstanding new games, after years of development, be released to silence," said Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock Entertainment. "Making a great game is hard enough, let alone ensuring people know about it, ensuring it has a solid testing plan, providing good technical support for customers, delivering strong post-release development are just a few of the prerequisites for a successful title. And that is hard-won experience we have developed that we want to share with the next-generation of game developers."
"Think of some of the breakout hits of ten years ago," continued Wardell. "What would have happened if they were released today? They'd get lost in the daily release noise. What sets Stardock apart from other publishers is that we're a developer too. That means we can lend developer and art support to games before and after release."
Hopefully the terms will be favourable and give indie developers a decent cut. Stardock won't be taking on many though, only three games per year will be signed to ensure they get the attention they deserve.
