Epilogue just announced the SN Operator for running actual SNES cartridges on modern PCs is now up for order, and it has Linux support. I already have the previous one they did, the GB Operator for Game Boy cartridges, and it works really nicely. These devices are really great for classic physical game preservation.

Made for supporting their own app called Playback which features a built-in emulator that they've gradually been improving with various advanced features like save states, rewinding, Flashcart Compatibility, shaders, a video games database, cheats, counterfeit cartridge detection, backups and a whole lot more. It has everything you need to get going once you've installed it and plugged in a cart to your PC or Steam Deck.

Time to go digging into your basement, attic or wherever you might possibly have some old SNES carts left laying around.

It's $71.99 and ships for everyone in July.

See more on their website.

Imagine Nintendo furiously flagellating their lawyer swarms in desperation as they seek to end everything not-Nintendo, screaming with impotent rage as the world thwarts their anti-consumer belligerence. 🐧

It's cool, but I think the hardware is too expensive for what it is: just a cartridge dumper. I have designed cartridge flashers and dumpers myself, and the BoM cost for those on volume might be lower than 5€ (with the cartridge connector taking most of the cost). Some of my Open Source and Open Hardware cartridge writers/dumpers just in case anyone is wondering:

* MegaWiFi Programmer V (for SEGA Megadrive/Genesis and Master System): https://gitlab.com/doragasu/mw-ch32-prog-sch
