Sony to no longer bring PlayStation narrative single-player games to PC

It is now reportedly confirmed that Sony will no longer bring their PlayStation narrative single-player games to PC. Return of the console wars?

Back in March there was the report that Sony would be moving away from PC ports, and now it seems we have some further confirmation of this. Coming from Jason Schreier of Bloomberg posting on Bluesky to note: "SCOOP: PlayStation studio business CEO Hermen Hulst told staff in a town hall Monday morning that the company's narrative single-player games will now be PlayStation exclusive, confirming Bloomberg's reporting from earlier this year."

They've put quite a few games on PC including The Last of Us, Stellar Blade, Horizon Zero Dawn, Helldivers 2, Spider Man, God of War and plenty more. But, they faced a fair amount of backlash when trying to force the PlayStation Network - and even restricted a bunch of games from purchases in many regions on Steam. So they did make a quite a few missteps there.

With Xbox (or is it XBOX now?), Microsoft are refocusing as well with their new gaming CEO. They've moved away from the everything is an XBOX branding, and will quite likely push some exclusives as well.

And so, with that, I'm making a firm claim that the console wars have returned. What a shame, we had a good run of it on PC for a while, and thanks to Valve's Proton we've been able to play tons of these AAA games on Linux but all good things come to an end as they say.

Now we just need the Linux powered Steam Machine to actually release.

It's a pity, but not having big exclusives is one of the main reasons causing the XBox decline. Sony must have been taking notes and don't want the same to happen to PlayStation.

Imagine running a business where your value proposition is in putting up artificial barriers to access your goods/services.

As long as they don't start removing them...

There was an article recently, from Bloomberg talking about GTA VI and console-first release, stating that from multi-plataform game sales, around 50% came from PC, and I think these recent changes to stop releasing games on PC might come from that.

In my opinion, Sony and M$ lost this battle when they tried to have trimmed PCs as consoles. Valve saw the opportunity to blend together a console-like experience with a full-fledged OS instead, and people have responded to that. They've also seen the PC game market is fair-er(ish) that the console one, with true retro-compatibility, mod support, and better pricing.

There were some pretty big delays between the console releases and the PC releases, so I can't imagine it was hurting their sales. Maybe the negative reaction to forced PSN is what shut it down, if they were hoping to get new subscribers that way.

Aren't most entertainment/tech businesses like this, though?

Netflix produces stuff only to be consumed on their platform. Same with Disney, Nintendo, HBO, Valve (They don't release their games on other stores), Apple...

I wish it wasn't like that, but here we are.

"Buy our consoles, OR ELSE!" strategy. I guess they did run the numbers.

There's zero chance I'll get a playstation to play their "exclusives", although I gladly paid for them on PC, so that's a pity. But I suppose when you want to make profit on the hardware you sell at a loss, you have to force people's hand. A shame, since some of their PC port were really nice.

Maybe it's the idea of selling a console at a loss using some form of coercion just so they can hope to turn a profit later on should be re-evaluated… nah, who am I kidding. People were already up defending "muh exclusives", sadly. Oh well.

Numbers don't go up = shareholders unhappy = cuts.

Is that even still true? Have you seen what the prices have elevated to? Usually they go down over time, but not in these crazy times...

What if the declining console sales are not a result of the lack of exclusives but of shrinking living spaces of young adults? What will they do next if the numbers still don't go up?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If they prefer to not sell more games and trying (again) to force gamers into their platform...
When did this ever work out?
Sure, they'll try for a while. And then realize again... and come back to PC.

Do they think people have consoles and PCs? I have no data, but my impression so far was, the majority of people either are console players or PC gamers. Sure there are some that have both. Yet offering stuff on more platforms usually results in more copies. Only if they can really say people are buying now PC copies instead of console copies, it's a resonable conclusion to go console exclusive again. I doubt that though. I think PC gamers also bought their games additionally to the console gamers.

Well, I also won't get a console to play exclusives. Too many other games to play.

So Sony isn't getting my money for Horizon 3… their loss.

I cannot imagine that being a smart move financially. Most people I know who game on PC have bought at least on of the titles Sony brought over. Only one of them has a PS and most would never get one no matter which games they miss.

I don't know what Sony expected... That people start getting a PS after playing formerly exclusive games on PC? That everyone would start using PSN in one way or another?
They treated their PC customers less than stellar: forced PSN, Denuvo, intentionally breaking fetures on Linux, ports coming a year after their PS release at best... which is a shame, because some of those are technically quite good otherwise. I've always felt that bringing games to PC was a very good idea followed by a couple really bad ones.

After buying Bungie for way too much money, aiming to go full live service with about a dozen games, Concord arguably being the biggest finanical flop in gaming history and Marathon doing meh on Steam I thought they'd make some good decisions now that would make them some money. Seems like they don't want to do it on PC. Bummer. I'd have bought a PC version of Bloodborne in a heartbeat if it'd had been a proper port.

I don't know what'll happen to Sony if they keep making weird decisions, but seeing that they closed Bluepoint of all studios makes me think that a couple more will end up on the chopping block. I wonder who's next. My guess is that Horizon Hunters Gathering will be the end of Guerrilla. Well, we'll see...

This is a huge loss for everyone, including Sony itself...
I wonder if this has something to do with the next Xbox console being a PC and probaply able to play their games.

For now I´m just gonna be patient in the ancient wisdom that everything comes (back) to Steam eventually.

sad to see Sony is no longer making narrative single-player games, hopefully they start making them again in the future

Obvious. When the market becomes competitive, just cut off the largest share of consumers from you potential customer share.

Instead of replacing the jobs of the consumers, leaving them with no salary to spend in games, of all the jobs they could have replaced with AI they should have started with the easiest ones to automatize. CEOs 🤣.

I would've enjoyed sightseeing in Yotei at some point, but it's not enough of a draw to make me buy the hardware. A handful of mostly unremarkable exclusive games per generation means 'see ya in 20 years!' if that.

Overcorrection.

TBH for me all their best Single player games are already on PC. The only thing currently I would be interested in the future is another addition to the Last of Us series and potentially a new God of War game. I would assume both these titles would not launch til PS6 at this point.

Though hopefully some good will come out of this and Sony will refocus on making good Single player games again. This constant chasing of live service money is clearly not working.
