The development release of the Windows compatibility layer Wine version 11.8 is out now with the usual assortment of new features and fixes.

We usually see one new main stable release of Wine per year, so expect Wine 12 in January 2027. Valve will usually then give Proton a version bump sometime after. Valve currently have Proton 11 that's based on Wine 11 in Beta.

Highlights from Wine 11.8:

  • Mono engine updated to version 11.1.0.
  • More work on MSXML reimplementation without libxml2.
  • Improved keyboard layout support using XKBRegistry.
  • More VBScript compatibility improvements.
  • Various bug fixes.

They note bugs solved for the likes of: Microsoft Golf 99, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown, Petka, Assassin's Creed Shadows and more.

The included Wine Mono 11.1.0 update includes:

  • Upstream FNA introduced an internal WrapWindow API, for Wine Mono to use to convert between HWND and SDL_Window objects, and we now use it. This should prevent SDL_Window objects from leaking to the application, and prevent HWNDs from the application being treated as SDL_Window.
  • Symlinks are now included in the runtime files, which makes files in lib/mono/4.5 load correctly without needing to duplicate those dll's. When using the msi installer, symlinks are translated to reparse points.
  • IpcServerChannel.set_IsSecured now sets an internal value for the property instead of throwing NotImplementedException.
  • References to old versions of Microsoft.VisualBasic.Compatibility now forward to the current version.
  • Implemented Twip conversion methods in Microsoft.VisualBasic.Compatibility.VB6.Support.
  • Implemented Microsoft.VisualBasic.ErrObject.get_LastDllError.
  • WPF: Added basic support for right-to-left text and fixed a related crash.
  • Enabled windows system colors in System.Drawing.Color. (wine bug 59530)
  • Fixed some cases where Mono would fail to find system dll's when resolving pinvokes. (wine bug 56301)
  • Upstream updates:
    • llvm-mingw to 20260407
    • FNA to 26.04, plus a few changes needed for WrapWindow to work.
    • SDL to 3.3.4.
