ScummVM adds support for Myst in their daily builds

By - | Views: 11,493
I haven't really used ScummVM even though I've heard good things about it but it's possible that this might change with these news. Support for Myst and Myst: Masterpiece Edition has now been added to the daily builds and is ready for testing.

You can read the short, official announcement here: http://scummvm.org/news/20160327/

I personally enjoyed Myst years ago even though I never actually managed to drag myself through all of its brutal puzzles. It's also a game that has been practically impossible to get to run on Linux, so I had to leave it behind after the switch. I have been keeping my eyes open for engine replacements though, and it seems that ScummVM has one now. As you can see below, it does seem to work too.

At this moment the support can be found only in the daily builds, which means compiling a version from their Git repository at GitHub. It's not a particularly difficult process and I believe if you are into Myst you can figure it out quite easily. It's also worth keeping in mind that the Myst support is still in testing and you might run into bugs. Oh, and you naturally need the data files in order to run the game. Shouldn't this be part of ResidualVM?

The thing I want most is for them to add support for Discworld Noir, a game that I've only managed to run through a Windows 98 virtual machine pretty badly.

ResidualVM is focused on games with dynamically generated 3D graphics.

Myst has pre-rendered graphics, which makes it a 2D point'n'click adventure/puzzle game, which is ScummVM's main target group.

Great News! I really like this game.

This gets a news for ScummVM but not version 1.8.0 with eight new engines earlier this month?

Edit: Would also have been a good opportunity to mention their participation in this year's Google Summer of Code, students come apply! Only other game project I saw was Terasology.

I really love the myst series of games. I might grab this and play through it.
I hope Cyan's new game Obduction will have Linux support since they're making it in UE4.

ScummVM is great, it helps to add more functionality into older games that wasn't there before e.g. mouse support, better textures and better quality sound sometimes. but also makes the game cross-platform when it originally was not. you mainly just need all the resource files and ScummVM provides the executable.

As a reminder:

The gog editions of both lure of the temptress and beneath a steel sky use scummvm and are free (as in beer).

More free stuff which uses scummvm at:

Keep in mind that we write about things that we find interesting/useful. Like I mentioned in the article, I practically never use ScummVM and thus I also don't keep up with ScummVM related news. However, we do have the Contact Us page for news tips and anyone can submit their own articles, so if something is sorely missing and should be covered you know what to do.
