As a windows based developer what do/did you struggle with coming to Linux?

Reading though a recent blog post by liam that mentioned Linux user harassing developers I was a bit stumped, this is certainly not the community I know and love.

At that point I decided to make a "So you want to develop for Linux, here is how" sort of article, but ultimately dismissed the idea as I honestly do not know what problems developers face when trying to get their code to run on Linux.

So I'm thinking instead we could do this topic where people can post what problems they had coming to Linux and how they overcame them - or if they have yet to overcome them I'm sure the collective braintrust here at GoL can come up with a solution. :)

For me it was just a case of not understanding Linux, or rather a lack of willingness to understand. I was always part of the camp that thought "if it's free it can't be as good." Which obviously is completely wrong. It wasn't until I came across an article that really laid out the differences between Windows and Linux that I came to realise they could be utilised for completely different things. It wasn't so much about one being better than the other, just that both were used for seperate applications depending on the user's preference and needs.
