Debian texture problems on steam solution

Black textures on some games on Debian:

I had some problems playing some Steam games on Debian recently, the textures would not load properly with many of them appearing black. As I suspected the fix was very simple, though it was a nightmare to find and took me four days of hunting and tinkering to find. So I'll post the solution here to save anyone else the trouble in future.

Install these two packages, and it's fixed.

Open Source AMD driver? I thought that was the only one that used those libraries.

S2TC doesn't implement S3TC precisely to avoid the patent issues, which may result in reduced texture quality. In that case, the patent encumbered S3TC implementation is available on deb-multimedia.org as package libtxc-dxtn0. However, I doubt that most people will notice the difference.
