The real alternative is Sailfish OS, but it has the same chicken and egg problem that Amazon has, the store is really lacking. There is no whatsapp, no telegram, etc.
Sailfish OS is a real rpm-based Linux System. It has an android compatibility layer/subsystem that will let you run android apps with no hassle but that only works on the officially supported phones.
I had no luck with my Moto E2 very few apps work, even from the official Jolla Store (native sailfish apps).
