Probably won't have a huge effect for linux desktop users, Microsoft is focusing on their services and bussiness/server/IOT market now... but it won't bring anything bad to us either, so I think that net effect is positive, but probably not many of us will be able to feel the change in any meaningful way.

Having .Net core on Linux is the reason that I'm able to use a Linux Desktop full-time at work :)
I like it very much and the .Net Core team is doing a very cool job.
(There was no alternative actually in the cloud race since most sane people use Linux there, otherwise .Net would fade away)

PS: Note that .Net Core already runs since its very first version Linux. The big news now is that the full .Net Framework 4.8 on Windows will be the last Windows only version and from then on it is only .Net (Core) 5 for all platforms.

I hope it's released rather sooner than later so I can finally enable MFA on my account to use EXOPSSession and be able to login to Exchange on Powershell Core (Powershell 7 will also be full cross-platform)
