Hi all. Picked up Doom 3 via of Steam but I would like to play it natively. I ran this

doom3-linux-1.3.1.1304.x86.run

but I get this error

file system initialized.
--------------------------------------
Unknown command 'vid_restart'
idRenderSystem::Shutdown()
Sys_Error: Couldn't load default.cfg

Can anyone link me or assist me?

Try [dhewm3](https://dhewm3.org/), a source port.

You're using ubuntu. So, you can just install it with apt.

[ubuntu package](https://packages.ubuntu.com/eoan/dhewm3)

Where do you get the ' doom3-linux-1.3.1.1304.x86.run' binary, though? It doesn't come with the standard installation. Or is there a native linux version on steam now?

In any case I also recommend dhewm3; if not the game runs perfectly under proton in any case.

The dhewm3 page has a link to the download.

I got it from here - https://www.moddb.com/games/doom-iii/downloads/doom-3-131-linux-x86
That executable seems to be a patch (to something, I'm not sure what); but for the Steam version you don't need any patches at all.

As already mentioned, the best option is to install dhewm3 using your package manager; ubuntu seems to have it on the standard repos (fedora has it in rpmfusion-free).

When you launch 'dhewm3' from the command line, it looks for the game assets here: ~/.local/share/dhewm3/
All you need to do is to define symlinks from the folders inside $YOUR_STEAM_LIBRARY/steamapps/common/Doom 3 to that folder -- namely, the 'base', 'd3xp', 'Docs', and 'pb' folders.

Here's the official FAQ on linking to the assets: https://github.com/dhewm/dhewm3/wiki/FAQ#where-do-i-need-to-put-the-game-data-files

I have Doom 3 on CDs (I also have the expansion, but haven't been able to find it just yet) so I got the tar.gz from the dhewm3 website, unpacked that, then copied the required files from the CDs and unpacked the files from the patch into ~/dhewm3/base and the game just ran. Excellent job to everyone involved. I think I'll play some more tonight. :-)

That's what got me interested. So I picked up the game and now I got this error when running dhewm3

WARNING: couldn't load mod-specific base.so, defaulting to base game's library!
shutting down: couldn't load game dynamic library
Shutting down sound hardware
idRenderSystem::Shutdown()
Shutting down OpenGL subsystem
Sys_Error: couldn't load game dynamic library
shutdown terminal support

This looks relevant:
https://github.com/dhewm/dhewm3/issues/140

"make sure to install both the dhewm3 and the dhewm3-doom3 package - the latter contains the base.so"

I have now played a couple of hours. It's just great. It looks very good and barely makes my laptop's fan spin. The computer I played it on the first time barely managed around 12 fps at a low res and with low settings. I'm now on ultra at 1440x900 on a 10-yo machine with definitely less than 60 fps, but still very playable. I just might play it through again. :-)

This helped. Now I am setting up the resolution and such.

I got everything working except for full screen. I have a border on my screen and I'm unable to see the full menu.

On my side, I installed RBDOOM-3-BFG and works fine, it's available on AUR. Didn't try yet the .run file.

You are much better off using a source port than the original Linux version at this point.

Load up ~/.config/dhewm3/base/dhewm.cfg and set the following:seta r_fullscreen "1"

You would also need to do the same for ~/.config/dhewm3/d3xp/dhewm.cfg for the expansion pack.

Thanks. That did not work 100% but I made a config file awhile back for the Steam version under proton and copied that one over it and got full screen up and running.

Thanks to everyone. I recently ended this game and so did my wife a few days later. We had a great time. Loved it. It may be the best SP FPS of our experience in a long time.

Cheers.
