I was, as many were, disappointed by Vampire the Masquerade 2, so I'm looking for a first/third-person story-driven, single player RPG that isn't medieval themed or a Star Wars game (this is where almost all of the suggestions seem to be). I liked the original Bloodlines, the story was fun, but the theme/universe was vivid and choices seemed to matter, and how character points were spent was important. Combat was okay, but avoidable for the most, if you chose... so what am I missing?
Edit: Fixed thanks to @Caldathras

Mesoamerican culture, actually. I want to thank you for this recommendation. I'm playing the demo right now and it is an incredibly engaging and highly enjoyable game. Sort of reminds me a little of NOX -- only with a much deeper and more emotionally engaging storyline. I'll be adding the full version to my wishlist.
The characters are deep and encounters natural, leading to many stories and quests.
