Title: Casual/Social places for developer chatter
simplyseven a day ago
Hi, I'm curious if this group could help me with something.

I'm looking for casual, social spaces for those of us in creator spaces. Most of us are Linux and Gaming... but I don't see a lot of conversation around dev spaces.

Casual developer talk tends to happen a lot on "alternative" and old platforms.
IRC, Matrix and Mastadon.

I'm on Mastodon and I spent many many years in IRC. Honestly didn't know IRC was still popular and thriving. I kind of considered forums to be "old platforms", which is why I was asking around to see if others, like me, were looking for places to exist.

I'm a Linux user and a gamer...but unfortunately I was busy for like ~30yrs and now I don't know anyone.

FOSS often drives one to old platforms, due to a lack of IP protections, time to reverse engineer whatever proprietary trick has been pulled on it and the big influence of the retro community on open source.
You're right IRC is old and dying. That's part of its appeal for FOSS developers and that on the other hand is a big group of developers.
Gaming drives one to new platforms like Discord, Reddit and Twitch.
Sex drives one to young brazen platforms like OnlyFans, Tumblr and Reddit who haven't yet been punished by the payment providers.
Non-westerness drives one to Telegram.

How did you spent ~30yrs without building connections?
I don't know what you were busy with, but I went nearly mad after a single year not meeting people like me.

You're probably looking specifically for gaming and FOSS contacts and spent ~30yrs in a surprisingly non-technical environment in which case my advice would be to start looking for contacts physically.
Visit your nearest developer, gaming and/or FOSS event and/or volunteer for repair cafe or another organization where technically inclined people help their community together.

I don't really feel like getting into the intimate details of my life.
I was just curious if there were areas I hadn't seen.
