Title: Establishing root of ownership for Steam account
GustyGhost 18 hours ago
First, my Steam account has not been hijacked, and hopefully never will be. Though I am looking to help protect against that if such a day ever comes.

For Steam accounts created with a product key from physical game media, Steam support will use that as a way to verify ownership. However, the product key insert from my first ever Steam game purchase has long since been lost or destroyed. If ever my Steam account were compromised, or my tiny indie email service hosted out of Serbia where to shut down (preventing Steam Guard codes), I might be screwed.

How else can I authenticate my Steam account so that in the event of possible future compromise, I have a way of attesting ownership?

I thankfully never went through the process myself, but according to this guide, you can use a receipt for a current purchase as proof of ownership:

Makes sense since trying to produce a product key or purchase receipt from 20 or so years ago would be quite a feat!

I recently went through the process. I'm not sure which they used to verify my claim, but I was able to provide a "CD Key" from a giveaway on this very site, as well as a copy of HL2 which may or may not be mine (might be my partners).

You could get your own domain. In case your email provider goes down just point the domain to another provider and the mail should flow again. This is not free and carries the risk of you forgetting to renew that domain. Although a domain takeover would be quite unlikely if it has only been used for personal email and isn't an otherwise desirable string of characters.
